Retro: PR #3060 — LCORE-4904: Split assertion (nit)

This was a trivial 1-file, 5-line test refactor by a human author (tisnik): splitting a compound assert into two separate assertions in tests/unit/test_configuration.py. The review agent correctly classified it as low risk (1/5) and approved with no findings. The PR was merged by the author the following morning.

Timeline

  1. 21:21 UTC — PR created with initial commit d2b6aa3
  2. 21:22 UTC — First review dispatch triggered (run 40771336509)
  3. 21:23 UTC — Author force-pushed commit 07b5d3d (~1.5 min after PR creation)
  4. 21:23 UTC — Second review dispatch triggered (run 40771561842); first run cancelled ($0.60 consumed — sandbox was already up and LLM calls had started)
  5. 21:28 UTC — Review agent loaded; main model claude-opus-5-5 not served on Vertex, fell back to claude-opus-4-6
  6. 21:32 UTC — Subagents dispatched: Owners file #1 correctness (opus-5-5), GitHub templates #2 style-conventions (sonnet-5-5), Project file #3 risk-assessment (sonnet-5-5)
  7. 21:32 UTC — All subagent models fell back: opus → opus-4-6, sonnet → sonnet-4-6. Sonnet-4-6 also not served — subagents GitHub templates #2 and Project file #3 errored after ~3.3s
  8. 21:33–21:35 UTC — Orchestrator retried failed sonnet subagents as Python project structure #4 and Bandit security scanner #5 using opus-4-6 (cost escalation from sonnet to opus tier)
  9. 21:36 UTC — Review agent approved: "Looks good to me"
  10. 06:56 UTC (Oct 29) — PR merged by author

Observations

All findings below provide evidence for existing open issues. No new proposals are warranted.

  • Subagent model fallback → cost escalation (evidence for fullsend-ai/agents#379): When sonnet-5-5 subagents fell back to sonnet-4-6 (also not served), the review orchestrator retried them with opus-4-6 — a more expensive model tier. This is a concrete instance of the silent model unavailability problem described in agents#379, with the additional wrinkle that the retry strategy escalates cost rather than maintaining the intended tier.

  • Disproportionate review cost for trivial change (evidence for fullsend-ai/agents#497 and fullsend-ai/agents#439): Total review cost was ~$2.56 ($0.60 cancelled + $1.96 successful) for a 5-line test nit. The review dispatched the full subagent roster (correctness, style-conventions, risk-assessment) with 5 total subagent runs (3 initial + 2 retries). agents#497 proposes model downgrade based on scope classification, and agents#439 proposes scaling review detail to change complexity — both would reduce cost here.

  • Vertex model availability (evidence for fullsend-ai/fullsend#6883): Neither claude-opus-5-5 nor claude-sonnet-4-6 was served in this project's Vertex configuration. The pre-sandbox availability preflight proposed in fullsend#6883 would catch this before dispatching subagents with unavailable models.

Workflow quality

The review agent's verdict was correct — straightforward approval of a safe, trivial change. The cancelled-then-retried pattern from the force-push is working as designed (concurrency group properly superseded the stale run). No rework cycles occurred. The main improvement opportunity is cost proportionality for trivial PRs, which is well-tracked in existing issues.
