165-166: Duplicate: reject missing IDs for embedding/rerank before the LLM fallback.
The earlier comment on this block is still valid in the current revision. The runtime guard checks only that both IDs are set. The docstring says embedding and rerank require both IDs, but only the overloads enforce that. At runtime, a call such as resolve_model_instance("embedding") enters the LLM fallback chain. It then returns an LLM Model or raises NoModelConfiguredError("llm"). A partial pair for llm, such as only provider_id, also silently resolves a different model. This conflicts with the PR objective that explicit lookups raise instead of falling back.
292-315: Duplicate: add tests for the missing-ID contract.
No test calls resolve_model_instance("embedding") or resolve_model_instance("rerank") without IDs. No test calls resolve_model_instance("llm", provider_id="openai") with a partial pair. The fallback tests do exercise the real resolver path, because they patch resolve.configuration and resolve.retrieve_conversation. The missing-ID path is untested. Add these cases together with the guard in registry.py.

Walkthrough
Adds typed model resolution for LLM, embedding, and rerank requests. LLM resolution checks a conversation’s last-used model, configured defaults, then the first available LLM in provider registration order. New helpers read fallback values, and a dedicated exception reports when no LLM is available.
Adds helpers that return conversation last-used or configured-default provider/model pairs when available. Adds NoModelConfiguredError and tests its message and model_type.
Typed model resolution and fallback selection src/providers/inference/registry.py, tests/unit/providers/inference/test_registry.py, tests/unit/providers/inference/_helpers.py
Adds typed resolution for explicit LLM, embedding, and rerank models. LLM fallback checks conversation state, configured defaults, and available providers in registration order. Tests cover selection, skipped unavailable choices, and exhausted fallbacks.

Full details: Performance And Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
PASSED. resolve_model_instance scans the cached provider catalogs linearly and stops at the first available LLM (registry.py:231-234). Fallback checks perform at most one conversation database lookup and two catalog lookups; they do not create an N+1 pattern. The catalog scan is O(total cached models), with no nested input-sized scan, unbounded state, or unpaginated external List operation. No request handler currently calls the new method.
Full details: Security And Secret Handling
Explanation
No blocking security issue is introduced. The authoritative diff changes inference resolution, errors, and tests; it adds no API endpoint or Kubernetes Secret manifest. The new lookup uses SQLAlchemy parameter binding via filter_by(id=conversation_id) and performs no SQL, command, or path construction. Added logs contain only a missing conversation identifier and fixed fallback text, not credentials, tokens, conversation content, or model secrets. Explicit model resolution remains catalog-gated through get_catalog_model before provider instantiation.

- Around line 219-232: Update the `_first_available_llm` return path to satisfy
its `Optional[Model]` type without changing its call through
`_get_model_instance`; add an overload for the `"llm"` literal that narrows the
method’s return type to `Model`, preserving the existing spy-based tests.
- Around line 160-161: Update resolve_model_instance to reject requests with a
non-LLM model_type or only one of provider_id and model_id before entering the
LLM soft-fallback chain; keep complete ID pairs on the existing

[edge-case]src/providers/inference/registry.py:165 — When only one of provider_id / model_id is supplied (e.g., provider_id="openai", model_id=None), the guard if provider_id is not None and model_id is not None is false and the code falls through to the LLM soft-fallback chain. This silently discards the explicit provider hint — a caller saying "use this provider, pick any model" gets a model from a completely different provider. For embedding/rerank types (reachable at runtime despite overload signatures since Python does not enforce overloads), the code would attempt LLM resolution or raise NoModelConfiguredError("llm") instead of a type-appropriate error. See also: [fail-open] finding at this location.
Remediation: Add an explicit guard after the first if block: if exactly one of provider_id/model_id is None, raise a ValueError (or a domain error) explaining that both must be supplied when either is given. For non-LLM types, also guard that both are required before entering the soft-fallback path.
[auth-bypass]src/providers/inference/resolve.py:31 — conversation_last_used() calls retrieve_conversation(conversation_id) without any user-scoping filter. The underlying query (utils/endpoints.py:66) is session.query(UserConversation).filter_by(id=conversation_id).first() — no user_id check. A caller who supplies another user's conversation_id can influence which provider/model pair the soft-fallback selects for their request. While the data leaked is limited to provider/model preferences (not conversation content), it allows cross-tenant model-selection influence and leaks the existence of conversation IDs. See also: [edge-case] finding at nearby location.
Remediation: Pass the authenticated user_id into conversation_last_used() and add a .filter_by(user_id=user_id) predicate to the conversation lookup, or use a user-scoped retrieval helper that already exists in the codebase.
[missing-test]tests/unit/providers/inference/test_registry.py — No test covers the partial-explicit-ids scenario where provider_id is provided but model_id is None (or vice versa). Tests should verify that the method raises an appropriate error when only one of the two explicit identifiers is supplied.
Low
[fail-open]src/providers/inference/registry.py:165 — resolve_model_instance() requires both provider_id AND model_id to honour explicit selection. If a caller supplies only one, the explicit value is silently discarded and the soft-fallback chain runs, potentially resolving to a completely different provider/model. Additionally, the soft-fallback chain is unconditionally entered for any model_type when provider_id/model_id are omitted, but every fallback step hardcodes "llm". At runtime nothing prevents resolve_model_instance("embedding") from silently returning an LLM Model instance. See also: [edge-case] finding at this location.
Remediation: When exactly one of provider_id/model_id is supplied, raise a ValueError. Add a runtime guard: if model_type is not "llm", raise an error indicating that embedding and rerank resolution requires explicit provider_id and model_id.
[edge-case]src/providers/inference/resolve.py:31 — conversation_last_used calls retrieve_conversation(conversation_id) which performs a synchronous database query (session.query(...).first()). resolve_model_instance is itself synchronous, so this works, but the DB session is opened inside a request-path call. If this registry method is ever invoked from an async endpoint handler (which is the norm in this FastAPI project), the synchronous DB I/O will block the event loop.
[missing-test]tests/unit/providers/inference/test_resolve.py — configured_defaults returns None when eitherdefault_provider or default_model is unset, but the test only covers the case where both are None. The half-set scenario (one set, the other None) is not tested.

Retro: PR #3037 — LCORE-4711: Added model resolution logic
Timeline
Oct 27: asimurka opened PR with ProviderRegistry.resolve_model_instance (9 files, 619 additions). CodeRabbit posted 5 actionable comments (type errors, formatting, missing guards for embedding/rerank).
Oct 27–29: Author force-pushed three times, fixing CodeRabbit's type-error and formatting issues.
Oct 29 10:18: fullsend review agent started on final commit 5eb4874 ($3.93, Claude Opus 4.6).
Oct 29 10:34: Review agent posted CHANGES_REQUESTED with 6 findings (3 medium, 3 low).
Oct 29 10:49: Author dismissed edge-case finding: "This is validated on request level."
Oct 29 10:50: Author dismissed auth-bypass finding: "The ownership of the conversation will be checked elsewhere."
Oct 30 07:55: tisnik approved with "LGTM" — no engagement with agent findings.
Oct 30 07:57: PR merged. No code changes after the review agent's CHANGES_REQUESTED.
Review quality
The review agent's work was high quality. Its 6 findings included substantive issues:
[medium] edge-case: Partial provider_id/model_id falls through to LLM soft-fallback (also found by CodeRabbit independently).
[medium] auth-bypass: conversation_last_used() calls retrieve_conversation() without user_id scoping — verified: the function filters only by conversation ID, while the sibling can_access_conversation() properly checks ownership.
[medium] missing-test: No test covers partial-explicit-ids scenario.
[low] fail-open, [low] edge-case (sync DB in async path), [low] missing-test.
The overlap between CodeRabbit and fullsend-ai-review on the partial-IDs finding is a positive signal — two independent reviewers reached the same conclusion.
Autonomy delta: inconclusive
The human reviewer (tisnik) approved with "LGTM" and no inline comments. Per the autonomy-readiness framework, this is classified as inconclusive — absence of human comments does not mean absence of review, and the delta between agent and human review cannot be meaningfully computed.
Systemic pattern: unresolved medium findings merged without tracking
The PR was merged with the agent's CHANGES_REQUESTED unresolved and no tracking issues filed for the dismissed findings. This pattern is already well-tracked:
fullsend-ai/fullsend#1956: Auto-file tracking issues for unresolved medium+ severity review findings — this retro provides additional evidence for that proposal.
fullsend-ai/fullsend#7924: Route human pull_request_review events to a lightweight review pass before merge.
fullsend-ai/fullsend#664: Incorporate existing human and third-party bot reviews into assessment.
The auth-bypass finding specifically (conversation_last_used() missing user_id scoping) was verified against the codebase and is tracked in the proposal below. The function has no production callers yet (resolve_model_instance is only used in tests), so the risk is latent but should be addressed before the method is wired into endpoints.
