Redact PII from span content attributes (request.input, response.output,
rag.input) in-process, before spans leave lightspeed-core, so no unredacted
span is put on the wire. Redaction is delegated to the lightspeed-data-anonymizer
engine (Presidio + spaCy).
The exporter is enabled with OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER=redacting_otlp,
so auto-instrumentation runs it inside the BatchSpanProcessor (background thread,
off the request path) with no change to handler code. It respects OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_PROTOCOL
(gRPC or HTTP) and delegates to the matching OTLP exporter after redaction.
Type of change
src/observability/redacting_span_exporter.py: RedactingSpanExporter +
protocol-aware delegate selection; fail-closed on redaction error (a span
whose redaction fails is dropped, never exported unredacted; healthy spans in
the batch still export)
deploy/lightspeed-stack/Containerfile: the spaCy model is baked into the image
(supports disconnected environments).
docker-compose(.library).yaml: in-process redaction enabled by default
(OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER=redacting_otlp)
tests: unit tests for the exporter; e2e scenario
(otel_redaction.feature + "did not receive" step) asserting a known PII value
sent in a query is absent from exported telemetry
The changes add in-process redaction for selected telemetry attributes before OTLP export. They configure the spaCy model in the container build and set Compose defaults for the redacting exporter. The Compose stack adds Jaeger under the observability profile. Unit and end-to-end tests cover the exporter and redaction behavior.

Summary
Exporter implementation and registration pyproject.toml, src/observability/redacting_span_exporter.py
RedactingSpanExporter anonymizes nonempty string values for three selected span attributes before delegating export. It drops spans when redaction fails and delegates shutdown and force-flush calls. Project metadata registers the exporter and adds the nh3>=0.3.6 dependency for HTML redaction.
Model and telemetry deployment configuration deploy/lightspeed-stack/Containerfile, docker-compose-library.yaml, docker-compose.yaml
The non-hermetic container build downloads the en_core_web_lg spaCy model after uv sync. Compose defaults select redacting_otlp. The Compose stack adds an OTLP-enabled Jaeger service under the observability profile.
Redaction and export validation tests/unit/observability/test_redacting_span_exporter.py, tests/e2e/features/otel_redaction.feature, tests/e2e/features/steps/opentelemetry.py, tests/e2e/test_list.txt
Unit tests cover attribute redaction, error handling, lifecycle delegation, and protocol selection. The end-to-end scenario checks that telemetry contains a marker but not an email address.
Telemetry redaction does not cover tool results or feedback comments, so PII in those fields can still be exported. Hermetic container builds also lack the spaCy model that the default redacting exporter needs. Fix both before merging.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "LCORE-4313: in-process PII redaction" names the main change. The changeset adds a RedactingSpanExporter that redacts request.input, response.output, and rag.input span attributes before export, and registers it as the redacting_otlp exporter. The ticket prefix is extra detail, not noise. The title is concise, specific, and matches the PR objectives.
Full details: Security And Secret Handling
Explanation
No blocking security violation was introduced. RedactingSpanExporter drops each span when anonymization raises and exports only successfully redacted spans (src/observability/redacting_span_exporter.py:123-139). Its error log records only the span name, not span content. The Jaeger UI is limited to loopback with 127.0.0.1:16686 and is profile-gated (docker-compose.yaml:242-250). The added bearer value is the existing synthetic E2E fixture token used throughout the test suite, not a production secret. Prior failure addressed: The exporter now drops spans on redaction errors at src/observability/redacting_span_exporter.py:123-139. Jaeger is profile-gated and binds only to 127.0.0.1:16686 in docker-compose.yaml:242-250.
Full details: Performance And Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
Meaningful performance regression remains. In src/observability/redacting_span_exporter.py:125-143,150-166, the exporter iterates through every span and up to three content attributes, calling PIIAnonymizer.anonymize_text for each value. That method runs Presidio analysis and the configured spaCy en_core_web_lg model (src/pii_redaction_engine/anonymizer.py:347-399,401-436). Compose enables this exporter by default (docker-compose.yaml:126-129). This adds up to three heavyweight NLP analyses per span in each export batch and can reduce exporter throughput, causing BatchSpanProcessor queue pressure or dropped telemetry. This matches the expensive-work-inside-loops condition.
Resolution
Add a true batch anonymization operation and use it once per bounded export batch while preserving each attribute's result. Enforce explicit batch-size and input-size limits. Add a representative throughput and queue-pressure test. If the anonymizer cannot provide batch processing, use a bounded worker design with explicit drop or backpressure behavior instead of running unrestricted spaCy analysis for every attribute in the export loop.

Review comments at @docker-compose.yaml:
- Line 247: Update the Jaeger startup instruction to use port 4318 for the
default http/protobuf exporter, or explicitly instruct users to set
OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_PROTOCOL to grpc when using port 4317.
- Line 137: Update the DATA_ANONYMIZER_SPACY_MODEL default in both Compose

model installed in the image when only SPACY_MODEL is set.
- Line 255: Update the Jaeger UI port mapping in the observability profile to
bind host port 16686 to loopback rather than all host interfaces, preserving the
container port and existing service configuration.
Review comments at @src/observability/redacting_span_exporter.py:
- Around line 124-128: Update the exception handling in the anonymize_text flow
to prevent unredacted content from reaching the OTLP delegate: remove the
affected content attribute or drop the span before export. Do not continue with
the original value when redaction fails.
- Around line 64-65: Update the protocol selection logic for
OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_PROTOCOL so http/json is rejected explicitly rather than
routed to HTTPSpanExporter. Match supported values such as grpc and
http/protobuf explicitly, preserving HTTPSpanExporter for http/protobuf.

32-32: 🎯 Functional Correctness
The marker already identifies the email-bearing span.
responses_endpoint_handler creates one root span for the non-streaming request. handle_responses_with_tracing assigns both request.input and request.safety_identifier to that span before export. The collector buffers complete OTLP request bodies, so the marker check cannot observe that span without also observing its redacted input.

`--no-editable`
Install any editable dependencies, including the project and any workspace members, as non-editable [env: UV_NO_EDITABLE=]
`--no-editable-package` no-editable-package
Install the specified editable packages as non-editable
`--no-env-file`
Avoid reading environment variables from a `.env` file [env: UV_NO_ENV_FILE=]
`--no-extra` no-extra
Exclude the specified optional dependencies, if `--all-extras` is supplied.
May be provided multiple times.
`--no-group` no-group
Disable the specified dependency group [env: `UV_NO_GROUP`=]
This option always takes precedence over default groups, `--all-groups`, and `--group`.
May be provided multiple times.
`--no-index`
Ignore the registry index (e.g., PyPI), instead relying on direct URL dependencies and those provided via `--find-links`
`--no-managed-python`
Disable use of uv-managed Python versions [env: UV_NO_MANAGED_PYTHON=]
Instead, uv will search for a suitable Python version on the system.
`--no-progress`
Hide all progress outputs [env: UV_NO_PROGRESS=]
For example, spinners or progress bars.
`--no-project`, `--no_workspace`
Avoid discovering the project or workspace.
Instead of searching for projects in the current directory and parent directories, run in an isolated, ephemeral environment populated by the `--with` requirements.
If a virtual environment is active or found in a current or parent directory, it will be used as if there was no project or workspace.
May also be set with the `UV_NO_PROJECT` environment variable.
`--no-python-downloads`
Disable automatic downloads of Python.
`--no-require-build-hashes`
Do not require hashes for every build dependency
Use verbose output.
You can configure fine-grained logging using the `RUST_LOG` environment variable. (https://docs.rs/tracing-subscriber/latest/tracing_subscriber/filter/struct.EnvFilter.html#directives)
`--with`, `-w` with
Run with the given packages installed.
When used in a project, these dependencies will be layered on top of the project environment in a separate, ephemeral environment. These dependencies are allowed to conflict with those specified by the project.
`--with-editable` with-editable
Run with the given packages installed in editable mode.
When used in a project, these dependencies will be layered on top of the project environment in a separate, ephemeral environment. These dependencies are allowed to conflict with those specified by the project.
`--with-requirements` with-requirements
Run with the packages listed in the given files.
The following formats are supported: `requirements.txt`, `.py` files with inline metadata, and `pylock.toml`.
The same environment semantics as `--with` apply.
Using `pyproject.toml`, `setup.py`, or `setup.cfg` files is not allowed.
`--project` project
Discover a project in the given directory.
All `pyproject.toml`, `uv.toml`, and `.python-version` files will be discovered by walking up the directory tree from the project root, as will the project's virtual environment (`.venv`).
Other command-line arguments (such as relative paths) will be resolved relative to the current working directory.
See `--directory` to change the working directory entirely.
This setting has no effect when used in the `uv pip` interface.
May also be set with the `UV_PROJECT` environment variable.
`--python`, `-p` python
The Python interpreter to use to build the run environment.
See uv python for details on Python discovery and supported request formats.
May also be set with the `UV_PYTHON` environment variable.
`--python-platform` python-platform
The platform for which requirements should be installed.
Represented as a "target triple", a string that describes the target platform in terms of its CPU, vendor, and operating system name, like `x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu` or `aarch64-apple-darwin`.
When targeting macOS (Darwin), the default minimum version is `13.0`. Use `MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET` to specify a different minimum version, e.g., `14.0`.
When targeting iOS, the default minimum version is `13.0`. Use `IPHONEOS_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET` to specify a different minimum version, e.g., `14.0`.

<title>Using environments | uv</title>
<location>https://docs.astral.sh/uv//pip/environments/</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search6 [wordlim: 200] Published: 7 months ago; Crawled: 2 weeks ago; If uv is installed in a Python environment, e.g., with `pip`, it can still be used to modify other environments. ... When running a command that mutates an environment such as `uv pip sync` or `uv pip install`, uv will search for a virtual environment in the following order:
`$ use .venv\S cripts\a ctivate.nu
`
## Deactivating an environment
To exit a virtual environment, use the `deactivate` command:
`$ deactivate
`
## Using arbitrary Python environments
Since uv has no dependency on Python, it can install into virtual environments other than its own. For example, setting `VIRTUAL_ENV=/path/to/venv` will cause uv to install into `/path/to/venv`, regardless of where uv is installed. Note that if `VIRTUAL_ENV` is set to a directory that is not a PEP 405 compliant virtual environment, it will be ignored.
uv can also install into arbitrary, even non-virtual environments, with the `--python` option. For example, `uv pip install --python /path/to/python` will install into the environment linked to the `/path/to/python` interpreter regardless of whether or not it is a virtual environment. The `--python` option also accepts a path to the root directory of a virtual environment.
For convenience, `uv pip install --system` will install into the system Python environment. For example, installing into system Python on Debian prior to Python 3.10 is unsupported due to the distribution's patching of `distutils` (but not `sysconfig`). While we always recommend the use of virtual environments, uv considers them to be required in these non-standard environments.
If uv is installed in a Python environment, e.g., with `pip`, it can still be used to modify other environments. However, when invoked with `python -m uv`, uv will default to using the parent interpreter's environment. Invoking uv via Python adds startup overhead and is not recommended for general usage.
uv itself does not depend on Python, but it does need to locate a Python environment to (1) install dependencies into the environment and (2) build source distributions.
## Discovery of Python environments
When running a command that mutates an environment such as `uv pip sync` or `uv pip install`, uv will search for a virtual environment in the following order:
* An activated virtual environment based on the `VIRTUAL_ENV` environment variable.
* An activated Conda environment based on the `CONDA_PREFIX` environment variable.
* A virtual environment at `.venv` in the current directory, or in the nearest parent directory.
If no virtual environment is found, uv will prompt the user to create one in the current directory via `uv venv`.
If the `--system` flag is included, uv will skip virtual environments search for an installed Python version. Similarly, when running a command that does not mutate the environment such as `uv pip compile`, uv does not require a virtual environment — however, a Python interpreter is still required. See the documentation on Python discovery for details on the discovery of installed Python versions.</excerpt>

All `pyproject.toml`, `uv.toml`, and `.python-version` files will be discovered by walking up the directory tree from the project root, as will the project's virtual environment (`.venv`).
## uv run
Run a command or script.
Ensures that the command runs in a Python environment.
When used with a file ending in `.py` or an HTTP(S) URL, the file will be treated as a script and run with a Python interpreter, i.e., `uv run file.py` is equivalent to `uv run python file.py`. For URLs, the script is temporarily downloaded before execution. If the script contains inline dependency metadata, it will be installed into an isolated, ephemeral environment. When used with `-`, the input will be read from stdin, and treated as a Python script.
When used in a project, the project environment will be created and updated before invoking the command.
When used outside a project, if a virtual environment can be found in the current directory or a parent directory, the command will be run in that environment. Otherwise, the command will be run in the environment of the discovered interpreter.
When running a script, the project or workspace is discovered from the script's directory. Otherwise, the project or workspace is discovered from the current working directory.
* `unsafe-best-match`: Search for every package name across all indexes, preferring the "best" version found. If a package version is in multiple indexes, only look at the entry for the first index
`--index-url`, `-i` index-url
(Deprecated: use `--default-index` instead) The URL of the Python package index (by default: https://pypi.org/simple).
Accepts either a repository compliant with PEP 503 (the simple repository API), or a local directory laid out in the same format.
The index given by this flag is given lower priority than all other indexes specified via the `--extra-index-url` flag.
May also be set with the `UV_INDEX_URL` environment variable.
`--isolated`
Run the command in an isolated virtual environment [env: UV_ISOLATED=]
Usually, the project environment is reused for performance. This option forces a fresh environment to be used for the project, enforcing strict isolation between dependencies and declaration of requirements.
An editable installation is still used for the project.
When used with `--with` or `--with-requirements`, the additional dependencies will still be layered in a second environment.
`--keyring-provider` keyring-provider
Attempt to use `keyring` for authentication for index URLs.
At present, only `--keyring-provider subprocess` is supported, which configures uv to use the `keyring` CLI to handle authentication.
Defaults to `disabled`.
May also be set with the `UV_KEYRING_PROVIDER` environment variable.
Possible values:
* `disabled`: Do not use keyring for credential lookup
* `subprocess`: Use the `keyring` command for credential lookup
`--link-mode` link-mode
The method to use when installing packages from the global cache.
Defaults to `clone` (also known as Copy-on-Write) on macOS and Linux, and `hardlink` on Windows.

L500: Use confection v1.3 and Thinc v8.3.13, which implement custom validation logic in place of Pydantic, allowing us to properly adopt Pydantic v2 and provide full Python 3.14 support.
L501: Our dependency tree used Pydantic v1 in unusual ways, and relied on behaviours that Pydantic v2 reformed. In the time since Pydantic v2 was released there were a few attempts to migrate over to it, but the task has been complicated by the fact that the confection library has a fairly tangled implementation and I had reduced availability for open-source work in 2024 and 2025.
L502: Specifically, our library confection provides the extensible configuration system we use in spaCy and Thinc. The config system allows you to refer to values that will be supplied by arbitrary functions, that e.g. define some neural network model or its sublayers. The functionality in confection is complicated because we aggressively prioritised user experience in the specification, even if it required increased implementation complexity.
L503: Confection's original implementation built a dynamic Pydantic v1 schema for function-supplied values ("promises"). We validate the schema before calling any promises, and then validate the schema again after calling all the promises and substituting in their values. The variable-interpolation system adds further difficulties to the implementation, and we have to do it all subclassing the Python built-in configparser, which ties us to implementation choices I'd do differently if I had a clean slate.
L504: Here's one summary of Pydantic v1-specific behaviours that the migration to v2 particularly difficult for us. This particular summary was produced during a session with Claude Code Opus 4.6, so nuances of it might be wrong. The full history of attempts at doing this spans over different refactors separated by a few months at a time, so I don't have a full record of all the things that I struggled with. It's possible some details of this summary are incorrect though.
L505: The core problem we kept hitting: Pydantic v2 compiles validation schemas upfront and has much stricter immutability. The whole session has been a series of workarounds for this:
L506:
L507: ` 1. Schema mutation — v1 let you mutate __fields__ in place; v2 needs model_rebuild() which loses forward ref namespaces, or create_model subclasses which don't propagate to parent schemas.
L508: 2. model_dump vs dict — v2 converts dataclasses to dicts, breaking resolved objects. Needed a custom _model_to_dict helper.
L509: 3. model_construct drops extras — v2 silently drops fields with extra="forbid", needed manual workarounds.
L510: 4. Strict coercion — v2 coerces ndarray to List[Floats1d] via iteration, needed strict=True.
L511: 5. Forward refs — Every schema with TYPE_CHECKING imports needs model_rebuild() with the right namespace, and that breaks when confection re-rebuilds later.
L512: In order to adjust for behavioural differences like this, I'd refactored confection to build the different versions of the schema in multiple passes, instead of building all the representations together as we'd been doing. However this refactor itself had problems, further complicating the migration.
L513: `
L514: I've now bitten the bullet and rolled back the refactor I'd been attempting of confection, and instead replaced the Pydantic validation with custom logic. This allows Confection to remove Pydantic as a dependency entirely.~ Update: Actually I went back and got the refactor working. All much nicer now.
L515: I've taken some lengths to explain this because migrating off a dependency after breaking changes can be a sensitive topic. I want to stress that the changes Pydantic made from v1 to v2 are very good, and I greatly appreciate them as a user of FastAPI in our services. It would be very bad for the ecosystem if Pydantic pinned themselves to exactly matching the behaviours they had in v1 just to avoid breaking support for the sort of thing we'd been doing.
L516: Instead users who were relying on those behaviours like us should just find some way to adapt --- either vendor the v1 version we need, or change our behaviours, or implement an alternative. I would have liked to do this sooner but we've ultimately gone with the third option.

## The problem
`spacy download en_core_web_lg` fails with "No package installer found" in venvs where `pip3` exists but bare `pip` doesn't. Regression in v3.8.12.
`✘ No package installer found
spaCy requires either pip or uv to download models. Please install one of
them and try again.
`
## Reproduction
# Debian/Ubuntu, or any ensurepip setup that creates pip3 but not pip
python3 -m venv testenv
source testenv/bin/activate
pip3 install spacy
python -m spacy download en_core_web_lg # fails
python -m pip install some-package # works fine
## Root cause
`_get_pip_install_cmd()` (added in `c6c78d6`) checks `shutil.which("pip")` — a PATH binary search — then returns `[sys.executable, "-m", "pip", "install"]`, which invokes pip as a module. The binary check and the module invocation test different things. When only `pip3` is on PATH, the binary check fails even though the module invocation would succeed.
The pre-3.8.12 code was correct: it unconditionally used `sys.executable -m pip`.
## Affected environments
* Debian/Ubuntu venvs (`ensurepip` creates `pip3`, not `pip`)
* Docker containers with Debian/Ubuntu base images
* Any setup where pip is installed as a module but the bare `pip` binary isn't on PATH
Not affected: macOS, conda, pyenv, Windows (all create both `pip` and `pip3`).
## Fix
Replace the PATH binary check with a module availability check — the actual precondition for `sys.executable -m pip` to work:
# Before
if shutil.which("pip"):
# After
if importlib.util.find_spec("pip") is not None:
The `uv` branch stays as-is since `uv` is a standalone binary.

Install the spaCy model in the hermetic build path.
The non-hermetic command runs the project interpreter. --with pip adds a temporary layer, but spaCy installs the model through sys.executable, so en_core_web_lg remains in /app-root/.venv.
The hermetic branch installs spacy but not en_core_web_lg. redacting_otlp then constructs PIIAnonymizer, which raises ValueError when the model is absent. Add a pinned model wheel to the hermetic dependency set and install it into /app-root/.venv.

Review comment at @deploy/lightspeed-stack/Containerfile at line 57:
Add a pinned en_core_web_lg model wheel to the hermetic dependency set and
install it into /app-root/.venv so PIIAnonymizer can load the model in that
build path; leave the existing non-hermetic installation flow unchanged.

@tisnik@jameswnl highlighting this: in non-hermitic builds, the model will be downloaded during image build via python -m spacy download en_core_web_lg.
For hermetic builds, the model needs to be available in the Konflux index

Redact PII from span content attributes (request.input, response.output,
rag.input) in-process, before spans leave lightspeed-core, so no unredacted
span is put on the wire. Redaction is delegated to the lightspeed-data-anonymizer
engine (Presidio + spaCy).
The exporter is wired through the opentelemetry_traces_exporter entry point and
selected with OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER=redacting_otlp, so auto-instrumentation runs
it inside the BatchSpanProcessor (background thread, off the request path) with
no change to handler code. It respects OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_PROTOCOL (gRPC or
HTTP) and delegates to the matching OTLP exporter after redaction.
- src/observability/redacting_span_exporter.py: RedactingSpanExporter +
protocol-aware delegate selection; fail-closed on redaction error (a span
whose redaction fails is dropped, never exported unredacted; healthy spans in
the batch still export)
- deploy/lightspeed-stack/Containerfile: the spaCy model is baked into the image
(supports disconnected environments).
- docker-compose(.library).yaml: in-process redaction enabled by default
(OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER=redacting_otlp)
- tests: unit tests for the exporter; e2e scenario
(otel_redaction.feature + "did not receive" step) asserting a known PII value
sent in a query is absent from exported telemetry
