Description

  • Previously LCORE only accepted environment variables in lightspeed-stack.yaml that were in the form ${env.VAR}, this change extends that behaviour to also include ${VAR}.
    • This is done by adding a wrapper around the currently used OGX parser that normalizes all environment variables into the appropriate format

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Configuration accepts environment-variable references in either ${VAR} or ${env.VAR} form, including supported default and conditional-value forms.
    • The deployment guide now documents environment-variable references and links to related configuration sections.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Secret references in native overrides remain deferred until startup, while other configuration values resolve as expected.
    • Vector-store comparisons and Solr endpoint construction now handle environment-variable references correctly.

Walkthrough

The change adds normalization for ${VAR} and ${env.VAR} references. Configuration loading resolves references where values are needed and retains canonical references in native overrides and synthesized output. The deployment guide and tests describe the supported syntax and behavior.

Changes

Environment reference support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reference normalization and resolution
src/utils/env_vars.py, tests/conftest.py, tests/unit/utils/test_env_vars.py
New helpers normalize short references to ${env.VAR} and resolve references through OGX. Unit tests cover supported syntax, recursive inputs, type conversion, and resolution errors.
Configuration loading and deferred references
src/configuration.py, src/ogx_configuration.py, tests/integration/test_unified_synthesis.py, tests/unit/test_configuration.py, docs/user_doc/deployment_guide.md, scripts/generate_openapi_schema.py, scripts/latest_tag.py
Configuration preprocessing resolves references outside native_override and retains normalized references inside it. Synthesis normalizes its inputs. Tests check that generated files retain references rather than secret values. The deployment guide documents the syntax and resolution behavior. The two script changes add blank lines in docstrings.
Resolved values in configuration enrichment
src/ogx_configuration.py, tests/unit/test_ogx_configuration.py
Vector-store ID comparisons and Solr URL enrichment resolve references before using their values. Tests cover both operations.

Merge Risk: Low · up to b3347

The new short ${VAR} syntax works for values resolved at load time. It does not yet work for provider-type or BYOK selection fields, where it fails during configuration generation. A referenced BYOK vector store ID can also be registered twice. These cases are limited to configurations that use references in those specific fields, so merging is low risk, but the gaps should be fixed or documented.

Full details: Performance And Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

No meaningful performance regression is introduced. normalize_env_references performs one recursive traversal with a module-level compiled regex, so its work is linear in the configuration size. resolve_env_references adds one linear normalization pass before the existing OGX resolver. The vector-store comprehension still resolves one ID per existing entry, as the base code did, and the PR adds no API calls, regex compilation in loops, unbounded storage, or list/query operations.

Full details: Security And Secret Handling

Explanation

PASSED. The changed code only normalizes environment references and delegates resolution to existing OGX behavior. src/utils/env_vars.py:32-69 performs no logging or external command/query execution. src/configuration.py:80-86 keeps native_override unresolved and canonicalizes it, which prevents API keys and other secrets from entering the loaded configuration. Synthesis tests also verify that resolved secret values are absent from generated files. The PR adds no API endpoints, authentication changes, Kubernetes Secret manifests, or OwnerReference changes.

320-320: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The comment is refuted. The migration lifts run.yaml into native_override, and LCORE normalizes ${MY_VAR} there before synthesis. The ${env.MY_VAR}-only correction would remove supported syntax from this migration path.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Resolve the BYOK vector_db_id before the comparison too.

The comment says new entries have resolved values. That premise is wrong in both callers:

  • synthesize_configuration (Line 1453) and generate_configuration (Line 1688) normalize their raw input but do not resolve it.
  • brag["vector_db_id"] therefore reaches Line 333 as ${env.STORE_ID}.
  • existing_store_ids holds resolved values.

Trigger: an operator writes vector_db_id: ${STORE_ID} (either spelling), and an existing registered_resources.vector_stores entry refers to the same store.

Result: the membership check never matches, and a duplicate vector store registration is appended. If the existing entry is a literal ID, the result is the same.

Resolve both sides for the comparison. Keep the raw reference in the emitted entry.

Resolve environment references used for configuration decisions.

${VAR} is normalized to ${env.VAR} but remains unresolved. apply_high_level_inference then uses it as a PROVIDER_TYPE_MAP key. BYOK RAG type selection similarly passes the unresolved value to _build_vector_io_config, which raises ValueError for an unknown type.

This is not a new failure for existing ${env.*} references. The merge base already passed unresolved values through these paths. However, the new short syntax remains unsupported for these decision fields. Resolve only the fields required for synthesis and enrichment decisions, while retaining deferred references in the generated configuration.

Review comment at @src/ogx_configuration.py at line 1483:
Update the configuration flow around normalize_env_references so synthesis and
enrichment decisions use resolved values for fields such as provider type and
BYOK RAG type, rather than unresolved environment references. Keep the original
references deferred in the generated configuration, and limit resolution to
values needed by apply_high_level_inference and _build_vector_io_config.
