Summary

Added the Dockerfile for building a ROCm image. I am using this image locally for the cli - it works as expected.

I can run it with

$ podman run --rm \
     --device /dev/dri \
     --device /dev/kfd \
     --group-add video \
     -v ./models:/models:ro \
     -v ../output:/output \
     -v ./ref-images:/ref-images:ro \
     localhost/sd-rocm --color <and more cli args>

This was AI generated - if thats relevant for this repo.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Docker image for running the project with ROCm-compatible AMD GPUs. GPU targets are not selected by default; specify the target or targets for your hardware when building.
  • Documentation
    • Added instructions and examples for building and running the ROCm image, including GPU device access. Running it requires video group membership and read/write access to /dev/dri and /dev/kfd.

Please address the following before merging:

  • Disable GGML_NATIVE or use the dynamic CPU variants setup from the Vulkan/CUDA Dockerfiles. The default -march=native ties the image to the build host’s CPU features and can cause Illegal instruction on another machine.
  • Add a ROCm run example to docs/docker.md, including --device=/dev/kfd --device=/dev/dri and any required group permissions. The existing generic run command does not expose the AMD GPU to the container.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a multi-stage ROCm Docker image. The build stage compiles the project with HIPBLAS. The runtime stage packages the binaries. The Docker documentation describes build targets and runtime device access.

Changes

ROCm Docker Image

Layer / File(s) Summary
ROCm build stage
docker/Dockerfile.rocm, docs/docker.md
Installs build tools, Node.js 20, and pnpm 10.15.1. Configures a Release HIPBLAS build with ROCm LLVM tools. AMDGPU_TARGETS defaults to an empty string. The documentation recommends specifying targets and gives single- and multi-target examples.
Runtime image and device access
docker/Dockerfile.rocm, docs/docker.md
Sets ROCm library paths, installs libgomp1, copies the built binaries, creates CLI and server wrappers, and sets /sd-cli as the entrypoint. The documentation describes device access and a runtime command that passes /dev/dri and /dev/kfd and adds the video group.

Merge Risk | ⚪ Minimal · up to 6d131

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 6d131

The ROCm build targets reach the HIP configuration, the runtime includes its required libraries, and the documented root-run container exposes the required devices. No actionable merge-blocking issue is established.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6d131

The new container requires direct access to AMD GPU devices and host-mounted files. This access is explicit and consistent with its intended purpose; no introduced vulnerability was established. The upstream image’s effective runtime identity and host-specific device permissions remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — If the container workload is compromised, its explicitly granted host interfaces include the passed /dev/dri device directory, /dev/kfd, and writable model/output mounts. The command does not narrow /dev/dri to one selected GPU. This describes granted authority, not a demonstrated driver exploit or container escape.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Host-device authority is requested by the operator’s run command rather than embedded in the Dockerfile. The documented command uses explicit device mappings, not --privileged. Its model and output mounts remain writable, matching the pre-existing generic invocation rather than introducing a new mount-permission downgrade.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The separate runtime stage imports built binaries rather than copying the build filesystem wholesale. This limits direct build-stage carryover, but does not establish a minimal runtime dependency set because the runtime starts from the ROCm development image.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For deployments requiring stronger isolation, pin and verify the ROCm image, validate a non-root runtime with host-specific device group IDs, mount models read-only, and pass only the GPU devices required by the workload. These are hardening options, not established defects in this PR.

Regarding the first issue: I chose the simpler path and added -DGGML_NATIVE=OFF. I did not notice any performance degradation on my machine (Ryzen 7 7700)

Regarding the second issue: I added the docs. Do you want them to contain more information on how to add the user to the video group and how to get read and write access to the device path?

To align it with the other Dockerfiles (like https://github.com/leejet/stable-diffusion.cpp/blob/master-956-1b0ba10/docker/Dockerfile.cuda#L24), the default should probably be either empty or the same list of devices supported on our CI (https://github.com/leejet/stable-diffusion.cpp/blob/master-956-1b0ba10/.github/workflows/build.yml#L453).

I am not too sure that this is a good idea. If we set DAMDGPU_TARGETS=gfx1010;gfx1011;gfx1012;gfx1030;gfx1031;gfx1032;gfx1033;gfx1034;gfx1035;gfx1036;gfx1100;gfx1101;gfx1102;gfx1103;gfx1150;gfx1151;gfx1152;gfx1153;gfx1200;gfx1201 (the list from your second url) the build time will increase quite a lot (based on my understanding). It would build for every listed target, not just the one the user actually has.

I haven't look at what your CI does, but I can understand that you want to be able to host a single docker image with a "rocm" tag that supports all supportable targets.

If my understanding is correct, the CI pipeline would be the only use case where the entire list is desired. Every "normal" user only wants to build for their hardware.

I would put the list of supportable targets into the Dockerfile. The argument must be at least one of that list (build fails if something else is supplied that doesnt match) or 'all'. The pipeline can use 'all'. All other users can define which targets to build for.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Let me know if this is fine for this repo, then I will implement it.

(the list from your second url) the build time will increase quite a lot (based on my understanding). It would build for every listed target, not just the one the user actually has.

On the other hand, a default target device will only be helpful for people who owns that device: everyone else will have a quicker build that won't work at all. And if the user is already changing it to their target devices, the device list will be overridden anyway.

So what I'm suggesting is targeting a wide hardware list by default, because that's the approach of the other Dockerfiles; and still allow it to be overridden by the argument list. The current example build command with the target device would work in the exact same way.

Alright, I'll adjust it that way 👍🏼

I added a note in the docs that explains that this parameter should be set. When building the docker image, the GPU is not passed in (only the running container gets it) - so there is no GPU to fall back on if no target is specified.
I have not tested if the build really fails, but I'd say its very likely.

Quote the multi-target build argument.

At docs/docker.md:43, the unquoted semicolon terminates the shell command. The shell passes only gfx1030 to Docker and executes gfx1100 -t sd . separately, so the example does not build both targets.

Suggested fix
-docker build -f docker/Dockerfile.rocm --build-arg AMDGPU_TARGETS=gfx1030;gfx1100 -t sd .
+docker build -f docker/Dockerfile.rocm --build-arg "AMDGPU_TARGETS=gfx1030;gfx1100" -t sd .

Please quote the AMDGPU_TARGETS value in the multi-target build example. The unquoted semicolon splits it into two shell commands, causing the build command to fail:

docker build -f docker/Dockerfile.rocm --build-arg 'AMDGPU_TARGETS=gfx1030;gfx1100' -t sd .
