feat(agents): add AI agents and MCP support (CIMD and DCR) - #215
Adds support for Kinde "AI agents and MCP" applications (CIMD and DCR) in a new kinde_sdk.agents module, with MCP adapters behind the kinde-python-sdk[mcp] extra.
Resource server (KindeAgentAuth)
Verifies tokens by introspection by default, using the application's credentials. Local JWT verification, or JWT plus introspection, are options.
Provides has_permission, has_role and has_scope, plus token revocation.
A Kinde outage is never answered with 401, so agents don't restart their sign-in.
Agent client (KindeAgentClient)
Discovers the resource and Kinde from a 401 challenge.
Identifies itself with CIMD, a pre-registered client, or DCR.
Signs in with PKCE through a loopback redirect, refreshes tokens, steps up on insufficient_scope, and stores tokens (in memory or a file).
CIMD helpers
build_client_metadata_document, client_metadata_response and validate_client_metadata_url.
MCP adapters (kinde_sdk.agents.mcp, Python 3.10+)
KindeTokenVerifier always sets resource; without it, the MCP SDK rejects every token.
kinde_auth_settings keeps offline in the published scopes and turns on resource validation.
Also includes get_agent_auth_context, mount_authorization_server_metadata and KindeOAuthClientProvider.
Framework integrations
kinde_fastapi.agents.FastAPIAgentAuth and kinde_flask.agents.FlaskAgentAuth, plus routers for serving a CIMD document.
Also: examples in examples/agents/, a README section, and the mcp extra in pyproject.toml. The extra is capped below mcp 3.0 because the client adapter hooks into OAuthClientProvider internals.
Testing
The changes were tested in two ways: automated tests against a fake Kinde, and a manual end-to-end run against a live Kinde business with the dcr_application feature flag on and an "AI agents and MCP" application.
Automated tests
179 new tests in testv2/testv2_agents/, all passing. The full suite passes too: 623 passed, 3 skipped (444 before this change).
Run with Python 3.14 and mcp 2.3.0.
Line coverage of kinde_sdk/agents is about 89%.
The tests use a fake Kinde (kinde_fake.py, on httpx.MockTransport) that matches the live behaviour found below. It also fails any test that calls a shared /oauth2/* endpoint instead of the application's /oauth2/agents/<id>/... endpoints.
The MCP adapters are tested against the real mcp package: a real MCPServer via Starlette's TestClient, and the real OAuthClientProvider flow.
The FastAPI and Flask integrations are tested with each framework's test client.
End-to-end against live Kinde
Setup:
The example MCP server (examples/agents/mcp_server.py) ran locally at http://localhost:3001/mcp.
It used KindeTokenVerifier, kinde_auth_settings and mount_authorization_server_metadata, verifying tokens by introspection (the default).
Two test users: user 1 with the read:docs permission, user 2 without it.
1. Discovery and metadata (examples/agents/smoke_check.py)
Kinde's scoped discovery document: the issuer is /oauth2/agents/<id>, CIMD and DCR are advertised, openid is not offered, and offline is.
The server's protected resource metadata: resource matches the Resource URL exactly, authorization_servers is the scoped issuer, and scopes_supported includes offline.
401 challenges:
With no token, a 401 whose WWW-Authenticate points at the metadata URL.
With a bad token, a 401 with error="invalid_token".
SDK code exercised: AgentAuthConfig, KindeAgentAuth.protected_resource_metadata, challenge and error_response, KindeTokenVerifier, and the www_authenticate helpers.
2. Resource server with a real MCP client (MCP Inspector 2.12, which registered with DCR)
User 1 signed in. whoami returned their user ID, client ID and permissions, and read_docs succeeded.
User 2 signed in. read_docs returned a tool error rather than an HTTP 403, so the client didn't loop back to sign-in.
SDK code exercised:
Live introspection: KindeAgentAuth.verify_token_async.
KindeTokenVerifier, with resource set so the MCP SDK accepts the token.
get_agent_auth_context and has_permission.
AgentAuthContext built from real Kinde claims, including permissions from the token and scopes from scp.
3. Token contents (smoke_check.py --token, using a token Kinde issued)
iss is the Kinde domain, and aud contains the Resource URL.
There's no openid scope.
offline is in the token's scp and in introspection's scope. This confirms that kinde_auth_settings can require offline by default.
Introspection with the application's credentials returns active: true.
4. Agent client with DCR (examples/agents/cli_agent.py, no CIMD URL)
The first run:
discovered the resource and Kinde from the 401 challenge;
registered with DCR;
signed in with the browser through a loopback redirect and PKCE (S256);
exchanged the code and called the MCP server (initialize).
The second run reused the stored tokens with no browser.
build_client_metadata_document generated the document, which was hosted over HTTPS on a test domain added to the application's Trusted agent hosts.
cli_agent.py, given the document URL as its client ID, signed in and called the server with no registration step.
6. FastAPI integration (examples/agents/fastapi_resource_server.py, in place of the MCP server on the same Resource URL)
FastAPIAgentAuth served the protected resource metadata and the authorization server metadata mirror: the scoped issuer, with offline in scopes_supported.
The require() dependency answered:
with no token, a 401 whose WWW-Authenticate points at the metadata URL;
with a bad token, a 401 with error="invalid_token".
A token Kinde issued to the agent client (CIMD) got a 200 from GET /api/me, with the user, agent and permissions from Kinde.
GET /api/docs (require_permission("read:docs")) returned the expected result for the signed-in user's permissions. When the permission was missing, it was a plain 403, not insufficient_scope, so the agent didn't try to sign in again.
7. Failure cases
Revocation.
KindeAgentAuth.revoke_token revoked the agent's access token, and verify_token then rejected it.
On the agent's next run, the refresh failed and a fresh browser sign-in started, as expected.
Another application's credentials. Introspecting a valid token with a second application's credentials returned 200 {"active": false}.
Kinde unreachable.
With Kinde unreachable, the real MCPServer and KindeTokenVerifier answer a 5xx, never a 401, so agents don't restart their sign-in.
This was run in-process against an unreachable host, not by cutting the network under the running server. MCP Inspector can't reconnect without internet.
Found during live testing and fixed
Live Kinde doesn't follow the RFC 7662 form for an inactive token. It answers introspection of an inactive or unknown token with 401 {"error": "token_inactive"}, not 200 {"active": false}.
The SDK had treated that as misconfiguration and returned a 5xx.
It now maps token_inactive (and invalid_token) to a 401 invalid_token.
A wrong secret or an unknown client (401 request_unauthorized) is still treated as misconfiguration: it's logged and answered with 503.
The fake Kinde in the tests now behaves the same way.
Not covered by the live run
KindeOAuthClientProvider (the MCP client adapter) and KindeTokenStorage: covered by automated tests only, against the real OAuthClientProvider.
The Flask integration, client_metadata_router and client_metadata_blueprint: covered by automated tests only. FastAPI and Flask share the same core, and both run the same parametrized tests.
The jwt and jwt+introspection verification modes: automated tests only. The live run used the default, introspection.
A refresh that succeeds after the access token expires: automated tests only. Live, only the failed refresh after revocation was seen.
Step-up on 403 insufficient_scope: automated tests only.
Deleting the application (discovery returns 404): not run.
Python 3.9 to 3.13: the suite was run on Python 3.14 only. The core is written to support 3.9, and the mcp extra needs 3.10 or newer.
Add kinde_sdk.agents for Kinde "AI agents and MCP" applications:
- KindeAgentAuth: resource server verification (introspection by default,
local JWT or both as options), protected resource metadata, RFC 6750
challenges, permission checks and token revocation.
- KindeAgentClient: agent client with discovery, CIMD, pre-registered
clients or DCR, PKCE sign-in, refresh, step-up and token storage.
- CIMD helpers: build_client_metadata_document, client_metadata_response
and validate_client_metadata_url.
- MCP adapters behind the [mcp] extra: KindeTokenVerifier (sets resource,
so the MCP SDK accepts tokens), kinde_auth_settings and
KindeOAuthClientProvider.
- FastAPI and Flask integrations, examples and README section.
Kinde answers introspection of an inactive token with
401 token_inactive rather than 200 {"active": false}; this is mapped to
a 401 invalid_token so agents refresh or sign in again.

Summary
Shared contracts and utilities kinde_sdk/agents/*, testv2/testv2_agents/test_www_authenticate_and_cimd.py
The public package exports agent-authentication APIs. New utilities cover configuration, authentication context, errors, client storage, client metadata, and WWW-Authenticate challenges. Tests exercise challenge parsing and metadata validation.
The resource-server API adds metadata, bearer-token authentication, JWT and introspection verification, caching, revocation, and HTTP error responses. Tests use a fake Kinde service to exercise verification paths.
The client adds metadata discovery, CIMD and dynamic registration, authorization-code flows, token refresh, authenticated requests, and disconnect handling. Examples and tests cover authorization and token storage.
The MCP adapters add client token storage and scope handling, server token verification, authorization settings, and metadata routes. The example and tests cover protected tools and client authorization.
FastAPI and Flask integrations kinde_fastapi/agents.py, kinde_flask/agents.py, examples/agents/fastapi_resource_server.py, testv2/testv2_agents/test_framework_integrations.py
The framework adapters add metadata routes, authentication and authorization helpers, and client-metadata endpoints. Tests cover metadata, authentication, permissions, scopes, and error responses.
Examples, setup checks, and documentation examples/agents/*, README.md, .gitignore
The examples demonstrate agent setup. The smoke checker validates discovery, resource metadata, authentication challenges, and optional client metadata and access tokens. The README describes configuration and the added integrations. .gitignore adds patterns for environment files and .DS_Store.
Verify the ID token signature using Kinde's JWKS #214 — This PR adds JWT and JWKS-based access-token verification, which addresses the access-token verification objective. The issue also requests ID-token signature verification, which these changes do not establish.

Install the mcp extra in CI so the MCP adapter tests run.
CI never installs the mcp extra, so testv2/testv2_agents/test_mcp_adapters.py skips on every run. The module calls pytest.importorskip("mcp") before its tests. The CI run still exits 0, so regressions in the MCP adapters are not caught by CI. Install the same pin that pyproject.toml declares for the extra, on Python 3.10 and later, in the unittest job:
The first run on Python 3.10–3.13 may expose failures that the local Python 3.14 runs did not show.

The only /email request in testv2/ expects a 403 for a token without the email scope. An implementation that rejects every require("email") request still passes this suite. The current adapters accept a token that carries email, so this test guards against a future regression rather than fixing a current defect.
Add a request with email granted. It expects a 200 response and the user payload. The client fixture runs each test against both FastAPI and Flask, so one test covers both adapters.

Agent client:
- Refuse the code exchange if the authorization server changed after
sign-in started.
- Reload tokens after discovery in refresh(), so tokens dropped on an
issuer change are never sent to the new issuer.
- Loopback listener ignores callbacks with the wrong state.
- Ignore a loopback resource_metadata URL from a remote resource.
- Raise RegistrationError for a non-JSON registration response.
- disconnect(forget=True) drops the registration without stored tokens.
Resource server:
- Treat a JWKS response without a keys list as unavailable (503).
- Answer 503, not 401, for an unknown kid while JWKS refresh is failing.
- Clear the introspection cache on revocation.
Also: reject userinfo in the Kinde domain and invalid loopback ports in
redirect URIs, decode percent-escapes in the CIMD route path, lock
FileAgentStorage across processes, harden smoke_check.py, and install
the mcp extra in CI so the MCP adapter tests run.
Reject non-string DCR client_id values during registration.
_register accepts any truthy client_id, including an integer, and persists it unchanged. Authorization URL construction and the default client_secret_post and none token requests tolerate an integer. is stored under the port the listener bound).
Also:
- Reject a DCR client_id that isn't a non-empty string.
- Reject a CIMD route path that would become a route variable after
decoding ("<" ">" for Flask, "{" "}" for FastAPI).
- README: with introspection caching, revocation reaches other workers
only when their cache entry expires.
- smoke_check.py: form-encode introspection credentials (RFC 6749 2.3.1).

kinde_sdk/agents/client.py:485-486 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
Per-port registrations and the index grow with each sign-in that reaches a new loopback port.
The default listener binds an ephemeral port on each run. _client_identity keys each registration by issuer|redirect_uri, so each new port adds a registration and an index entry. Only disconnect(forget=True) removes them. Storage and sign-in work therefore grow with the number of sign-ins. Most of that growth comes from the registrations, not the index, so retiring index entries alone would not stop it. The index adds one short string per key and is not the main cost.
Suggested fix
Retire registrations for redirect URIs the agent no longer uses, or cap the number kept. Retiring only the index entries would not stop the growth.

Add a separate token-present discovery-failure test.
Deleting tokens is intentional in this test. It covers forget=True cleanup when no tokens remain. With no tokens, disconnect() skips discover(), so the test does not cover discovery failure during token revocation. Keep this test and add a separate case with tokens still stored and fake.prm = None.

Registrations were keyed by issuer and redirect URI, so accounts sharing
a storage file shared one registration, and forget on one account broke
the others. With the default port-less loopback redirect, every sign-in
also added a new registration that was never cleaned up.
Each account now keeps a single registration slot. A new redirect URI,
issuer or expiring secret replaces it, forget deletes only that slot,
and invalid_client cleanup leaves a newer registration alone. This also
removes the registration index and its non-atomic update.
Also reject a non-string client_secret from registration, and in FastAPI
reject only real {name} path parameters rather than any brace.
Add tests for paths Codecov flagged as untested:
- async JWT and jwt+introspection verification, including a revoked
token with a valid signature and a forged signature never reaching
introspection
- sync and async revocation: cache clearing, network failure and a
refused revoke
- the introspection cache size limit, both with and without expired
entries to drop
- invalid_client on the code exchange dropping the stored registration

Make the stale-registration delete conditional on the stored value.

Make the stale-registration delete conditional on the stored value.
_drop_registration reads the stored registration, then deletes it in a separate storage call. FileAgentStorage.get_registration takes no file lock, so another process can save a new registration between the two calls. The delete then removes that registration, and the next sign-in or token refresh must start again. Hold one lock across both operations, or add a compare-and-delete operation to AgentClientStorage.

_register stores the DCR value without a type check. A string value causes TypeError at the expiry check on the next authorization. Validate the value as a number and raise RegistrationError on failure.

Records that already store a string value still raise TypeError until they are replaced.

Update _register to validate client_secret_expires_at as a number before storing

Cover stored tokens across a registration replacement.
Cover stored tokens across a registration replacement.
test_new_redirect_uri_replaces_the_registration deletes the account's tokens before it replaces the registration. No test keeps tokens issued to the old registration while a new redirect URI replaces it. In that state, refresh() finds that the stored registration's client_id no longer matches the token's client_id. It then deletes the tokens and returns None. No test covers this branch. This is the intended handling, so the test should assert that a new sign-in is required and that the tokens are removed.
Add a test that keeps the tokens, replaces the registration through begin_authorization(), and asserts that refresh() returns None and removes the tokens.

Cleaning up after invalid_client read the stored registration and then
deleted it in a separate call, so another process could save a newer
registration in between and lose it. The built-in stores now offer
delete_registration_if_client(), which FileAgentStorage runs under its
file lock, and the client uses it when a store provides it. Custom
stores without it keep working as before.
Also reject a registration response whose client_secret_expires_at is
not a number, instead of failing later with a TypeError, and test that
tokens issued to a replaced registration require a new sign-in.
