site:docs.github.com self-hosted runners reused between jobs cleanup Docker containers workflow runner state

💡 Result:

GitHub’s docs say **self-hosted runners are not automatically a clean machine for every job**—they can be reused, so don’t assume all runner state is reset between jobs. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/concepts/runners/self-hosted-runners?utm_source=openai))

For containerized jobs, GitHub’s container-customization docs specify that the `cleanup_job` hook is called at job end, and that its expected work includes stopping and deleting job/service containers and networks, plus cleaning up anything else created for that job. This describes the cleanup expected of the container customization implementation; it does **not** establish that all Docker resources or other host state are removed. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/how-tos/manage-runners/self-hosted-runners/customize-containers?utm_source=openai))

For stronger isolation, GitHub recommends **ephemeral runners** for autoscaling: a runner processes one job, is automatically deregistered, and you can automate wiping it afterward. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/reference/runners/self-hosted-runners?utm_source=openai))

site:docs.docker.com/reference/cli/docker/container/run/ --name container name already in use unique name existing stopped container

💡 Result:

Docker requires container names to be unique, including names held by stopped containers. The `--name` option assigns a name; if that name is already taken, remove the old container or choose another name. The docs show how to list stopped containers with `docker ps -a`, restart one with `docker start`, or remove it with `docker rm`. ([docs.docker.com](https://docs.docker.com/reference/cli/docker/container/run/?utm_source=openai))

🌐 Web query:

site:docs.github.com/actions always() status check function steps continue after failure cancellation

💡 Result:

GitHub Actions’ `always()` makes a step’s condition true even after a failure **or cancellation**, so it can keep work running after you cancel a workflow. GitHub recommends `if: ${{ !cancelled() }}` when you want a step to run after success or failure but not after cancellation. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/reference/workflows-and-actions/expressions?ref=blog.mergify.com&utm_source=openai))

For a step that should run **only after a failure**, use `if: ${{ failure() }}`. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/reference/workflows-and-actions/expressions?ref=blog.mergify.com&utm_source=openai))

Remove the opt-in containers after each job.

When a caller opts in on a reused self-hosted runner, the detached containers can remain in Docker after the job. Docker reserves a container name even after its container stops, so a later run can fail at docker run --name.

Add cleanup steps with always() so they also run after readiness or test failures. Remove only containers whose start steps succeeded.

Review comment at @.github/workflows/elixir-ci-reusable.yml at line 219:
Update the opt-in PostgreSQL and ArangoDB start steps to have identifiers, then
add cleanup steps using always() that force-remove each named container only
when its corresponding start step succeeded. Ensure cleanup runs after readiness
or test failures.
