fix(idris-dependents): green CI on main + close #628 review findings - #644
Update (2026-11-05):main's red CI was fixed independently by #649, which merged the same three test repairs as this PR's first commit. main has been merged in (50a5b5f, conflicts resolved to main's ready_mock plus this branch's superset scan_edge_tests). Against main, this PR now only adds the review fixes below and their tests:
Codex/CodeRabbit on this PR: relative URLs that climb into the host (git-verified), owner pages with ?/#, authority ending at ?/# (host spoofing)
87 tests pass. #642 is now fully superseded by #649.
Why
Follow-up to #628. That PR merged while CodeRabbit's bot-generated tests were failing, so build · test · clippy (idris-dependents) has been red on main since 2026-10-27. This PR turns it green and closes the review findings that were still open when #628 merged.
Commit 1: repair the tests that broke main
All three are the defects CodeRabbit itself flagged in its last review of #628:
scan_tests::ready_mock was missing the new responses field (E0063, so the target did not compile). It now takes the remaining fields from ..Mock::default().
GitHub references are now matched by host and repository owner, avoiding false matches from unrelated URLs. Owner matching is case-insensitive, and query strings and fragments are excluded from repository paths.
Relative submodule URLs are resolved against their GitHub superproject when checking references.
Unterminated quoted strings are consumed through the end of input.
Failed content requests now include a trimmed portion of the response body in error details. HTTP 404 responses are skipped without failing the scan.
#628 merged with CodeRabbit's generated tests failing, so
`build · test · clippy (idris-dependents)` has been red on main since:
- scan_tests: `ready_mock` omitted the new `responses` field (E0063);
fill the rest from `Mock::default()`.
- scan_edge_tests: the report JSON contract lacked the new `skippedUrls`.
- scan_edge_tests: the "hard failure" case used 404, which is now skipped
by design; use 500 for the hard failure and assert the 404 skip
(empty rows, URL listed in `skipped_urls`) separately.

…rom #628
Each fix has a regression test that fails on the previous code:
- ipkg: an unterminated string now runs to end of input, so
`brief = "depends = proven` no longer reports `proven` (Codex).
- refs: GitHub must be the URL's host, not a path segment, so
`https://example.com/mirrors/github.com/<owner>/x` is not a HIGH
match; ports, userinfo and `git+https` are handled (Codex).
- refs: `.gitmodules` keys are case-insensitive (`URL =`), as in git
config (Codex).
- refs/scan: relative submodule URLs (`../../<owner>/repo.git`) are
resolved against the dependent repository, as git does (Codex).
- scan: HTTP errors include a bounded excerpt of GitHub's response body,
e.g. "Bad credentials" for a 401 (CodeRabbit).

The .gitmodules parser resolves relative URLs with optional superproject context. The scanner supplies the repository name. The README classification description reflects host checks and relative URL resolution.

A malformed dependency URL can incorrectly receive a HIGH classification. Tighten scheme parsing before merging, or accept this bounded false-positive risk.

Explanation
The title names the scope (idris-dependents) and the two goals of the PR: getting CI green on main and closing the #628 review findings. The changeset matches both. Its file changes cover the GitHub URL matching, the .gitmodules handling, the unterminated-string lexing, the HTTP error body text, and the tests for them. The title does not name the most important code change, which is the review-fix work. It is still a real, specific description of the PR, and it is not misleading. Its wording is somewhat generic ("review findings"), and the "green CI" part refers to a different scope than the code fixes.

Thanks for using CodeRabbit! It's free for OSS, and your support helps us grow. If you like it, consider giving us a shout-out.
CI status:build · test · clippy (idris-dependents) is ✅ green here, and so are the required CodeQL and scan / gitleaks. The three red checks also fail on main (64ebfbe) with the same output, and this PR doesn't touch .github/:

Note that #642 contains the same three test-fixture fixes as this PR's first commit. Whichever merges first, the other needs a trivial conflict resolution.
…o like git
Codex on #644: git resolves a relative submodule URL against the whole
remote URL, so from alice/app `../../../github.com/hyperpolymath/proven.git`
is https://github.com/hyperpolymath/proven.git; the resolver stopped at
the owner/repo boundary and dropped it. Model the remote as
github.com/<owner>/<repo> so `../` can climb into the host part.
The new test's expected values are what `git submodule init` (git 2.43)
registers for a superproject with origin https://github.com/alice/app.git.

CodeRabbit on #644: `https://evil.example#@github.com/hyperpolymath/proven`
took everything before the first `/` as the authority, so the host after
`@` read as github.com. Per RFC 3986 the authority ends at the first `/`,
`?` or `#`; a URL whose authority is not followed by `/` names no
repository. Query/fragment text in the path was already dropped (9eccde1).

#649 landed the same three test-fixture repairs as this branch's first
commit. Conflicts resolved to main's ready_mock and this branch's
scan_edge_tests (a superset: it also asserts the 404 skip and the HTTP
error body), so against main this PR now only adds.

Validate the scheme before parsing the authority.
The exact https://evil.example/... example is rejected, but a scheme-less value such as evil.example/?next=://github.com/hyperpolymath/proven is accepted. pack.toml and .gitmodules values reach points_at without earlier scheme validation. This false reference can produce Confidence::High because any pack or submodule reference receives high confidence.

Normalize all relative URL dot segments
With Git 2.43 and a superproject remote of https://github.com/alice/app.git, a submodule URL such as ../foo/../../hyperpolymath/proven.git is ultimately requested as /hyperpolymath/proven.git, but this loop stops consuming components as soon as it reaches foo and appends the remaining ../ segments verbatim. points_at consequently sees alice as the owner and silently misses this HIGH-confidence dependency; the reverse arrangement can also falsely attribute another owner's repository to a watched owner. Collapse dot segments throughout the resolved path, consistent with Git's documented rule that relative submodule URLs are evaluated like relative directories.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reject malformed ports before accepting the GitHub host
For a value such as https://github.com:evil/hyperpolymath/proven.git, this extraction discards the entire :evil suffix and points_at returns true, causing a malformed pack.toml or .gitmodules URL to become HIGH-confidence evidence even though Git 2.43 rejects it before making a request. Validate the optional authority port rather than blindly taking the text before the first colon; RFC 3986 defines the port as decimal digits, so nonnumeric, repeated, and out-of-range port forms must not be treated as GitHub repository URLs.
