Adds official documentation for Fluent Typed Scripting (FTS), taking users from a reproducible first log transformation to the typed-value and signal-specific references. Documents the configuration name fts and describes policies in Lua with typed access to telemetry, without implying static typing of Lua.
The eleven-page guide covers configuration, typed values and lifetimes, logs, metrics and deliberate series aggregation, traces, common helpers, rollback and runtime limits, comparison with the Lua filter, and complete log/metric/span recipes. Adds navigation under Processors and discovery links from related pages.
Availability follows the current 5.2 development implementation rather than claiming an unverified released minimum. Native support is distinguished from experimental browser WASM. The guide explains separate processor entries and scripts per signal, key-redaction limits, and that the sandbox is not a security boundary.
Validation:
All 35 code fences exercised directly from Markdown: 19 Lua, 6 YAML, 6 shell, and 4 JSON.
43 local pytest cases passed natively; the same 43 passed under strict Valgrind. All 42 Fluent Bit process reports had zero memory errors.
Tested against native Fluent Bit 5.2.0 at 7ea6759f26d0ebdaa0acb677eb68aa63e4c0d549, including native JIT startup and invalid configuration rejection.
Focused FTS internal test passed; four rollback integration cases passed normally and under strict Valgrind.
New pages pass Markdownlint; Vale reports no warnings or errors. All 83 checked link occurrences pass. Navigation titles and whitespace checks pass.
The local test harness and artifacts are outside both repositories and are intentionally excluded from this PR. The repository's configuration extractor does not recognize the plain YAML fences used by these processor pages; the local harness executes the actual configurations and scripts together instead. Related-page Markdownlint findings are limited to existing tracking images. Browser WASM execution and GitBook rendering were not validated.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Added Fluent Typed Scripting (FTS) guides covering setup, configuration, typed values, logs, metrics, traces, common helpers, errors, and limits.
Added a quickstart and recipes for log, metric, and trace transformations, plus guidance on native recipe blocks.
Added FTS links and guidance across processor documentation, including a Lua filter comparison and examples for metric normalization and OpenTelemetry data.
Clarified FTS availability, build requirements, runtime limitations, configuration, and error handling; listed FTS among the available processors and enabled it by default in processor build options.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The changes add documentation for Fluent Typed Scripting (FTS), including configuration, typed values, helpers, runtime limits, signal-specific guidance, and recipes. Existing processor, filter, installation, and OpenTelemetry envelope pages also gain FTS references.
The processor documentation introduces FTS, describes its availability and placement, and links to its guides. Existing processor, filter, metrics, installation, and envelope pages add FTS references. Vale exceptions add FTS terms and winstat.
Configuration and runtime behavior pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/configuration.md, pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/errors-and-limits.md
The guides document configuration, per-signal instances, startup validation, callback outcomes, rollback, runtime limits, and diagnostics.
Typed values and common helpers pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/typed-values.md, pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/common-helpers.md
The references describe typed value access, conversion, construction, and lifetimes, plus helpers for redaction, key filtering, JSON and time parsing, hashing, signing, and callback results.
Log processing and quickstart pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/logs.md, pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/quickstart.md, pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/recipes.md
The log guide covers callback behavior, properties, timestamps, and OpenTelemetry context. The quickstart and log recipe show configuration, policy behavior, and sample output.
Metric processing and recipe pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/metrics.md, pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/recipes.md
The metrics guide documents family callbacks, data constraints, helpers, scaling, and aggregation. A recipe demonstrates metric renaming, scaling, and aggregation.
Trace processing and recipe pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/traces.md, pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/recipes.md
The trace guide documents span callbacks, editable properties, events, links, and topology limits. A recipe demonstrates span transformations and redaction.
fluent/fluent-bit-docs#2799: Both PRs document FTS configuration, typed values, callbacks, signal behavior, runtime limits, and its processor and build-option entries.
fluent/fluent-bit-docs#2801: Adds release and upgrade guidance for the same FTS processor, including configuration and migration from Lua filters.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review d92c6
The new guide has a few remaining gaps in build-version guidance and in defaults for native recipe blocks. Readers could hit dropped records or startup failures with default settings. These are quick documentation fixes and are unlikely to block the merge.

Document the new Fluent Typed Scripting (FTS) processor added in
fluent/fluent-bit#12589.
- Add pipeline/processors/fts.md covering configuration parameters,
callback results and batching, typed values, log, metric, and trace
properties and helpers, sandbox limits, diagnostics, and build
requirements
- Add the FTS page to SUMMARY.md under Processors
- Add FTS to the available processors list in pipeline/processors.md
- Add FLB_PROCESSOR_FTS (default On) to the processors table, linking to the Fluent Typed Scripting pagex
- Add FLB_PROCESSOR_FTS (default On) to the build options processors table
- Spell out Fluent Typed Scripting (FTS) on first use across the FTS pages, including the Lua filter page title and SUMMARY.md entry
- Clarify how log groups are batched across input appends
- Reword JIT, FFI, NUL, AOT, and topology references, plus minor style fixes
- Add FTS heading and winstat spelling exceptions to the Vale styles
- Limit whole-batch error_mode handling to failures FTS detects after a batch is decoded
- Note that processor-layer decode failures keep and forward the decoded prefix, so error_mode: keep can't restore the original batch
- Validate the time field type and catch fb.parse_time errors in the event time example
- Document that records with a missing, non-string, or invalid time keep their original event time

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The example may treat fb.is_otel(log) as sufficient to access log.resource.attributes, although the page says records in a group opened in an earlier batch can have no context view. If is_otel remains true for such records, the example's guard is insufficient.
The example can raise on missing context instead of applying its policy; with the documented default error_mode: drop, the record would be removed.
This can occur when: An OpenTelemetry log record arrives in a later batch within a group opened in an earlier batch.

- Line 50: Update the parsing flow around fb.try_parse_json to inspect message
with get before calling get_string. Only extract and parse the value when it is
a string; handle numbers, booleans, and null without raising so the record is
not dropped. Verify the example with a non-string message field.
- Line 109: Update the `secret_refs` documentation to specify that reference
names must contain 1–128 ASCII letters, digits, underscores, periods, or
hyphens, and that empty keys fail initialization. Preserve the existing limits
and initialization behavior.
Review comments at @pipeline/processors/fluent-typed-scripting/configuration.md:
- Line 23: Update the `state_commit` documentation to explain that a local state
commit may occur before later encoding or storage fails; if the original record
is then lost, deduplication may suppress a retry while its key remains
unexpired.
- Line 23: Update the state_commit documentation to state that logs.dedupe,
logs.throttle, and window.hold_until require state_commit: local, that the
processor must be attached to an input, and that the stateful step must be last
in the recipe; clarify that initialization fails when these requirements are
unmet.
- Line 19: Expand the `recipe` entry in the configuration reference to provide
the supported step syntax, block names, and parameter schemas, or link to an
authoritative recipe reference that documents them. Verify the documented
details against the implementation rather than inferring them from the Lua
policies on the Recipes page.
- Line 19: Update the quickstart guidance for the `recipe` configuration in the
fluent typed scripting documentation to explain how to identify a development
revision that supports `recipe`. Make clear that checking `script` support or
enabling FTS does not establish `recipe` support, and document a reliable
revision or feature check without inventing one.

support the example.

`max_exemplars` requires a build containing Fluent Bit commit

existing selector and option documentation unchanged.
- Line 136: Update the `overflow` row in the configuration table to state that
`keep` passes an item through untracked when capacity is full or its encoded key
exceeds `max_key_bytes`; retain the existing supported-value and default

- Line 156: Update the `keep_when` table entry to state that when it is omitted
and no record matches `retain_when`, the processor discards every held record in
the window.
- Line 148: Update the `window.hold_until` documentation to qualify its
retention guarantee: on overflow, or when a record continues a group from an
earlier chunk, the record may bypass the window, so a match on that record does
not trigger `retain_when` for records already held; those earlier records may
still be discarded.
- Around line 179-180: Clarify the `with` configuration guidance for pack
blocks: when a block has no parameters, omit `with` or use an empty mapping;
when it has parameters, list them under `with` instead of leaving the
placeholder comment.
- Line 41: Qualify the `fluent-bit --dry-run` guidance so it promises
processor-parameter validation only for builds that run processor preflight;
note that recipes may still fail at startup on older builds. Link readers to the
recipe-support check, and preserve the separate hot-reload validation guidance.
