[Feature] eksctl on Conda Forge? #8899

Open

Description

@dlqqq

What feature/behavior/change do you want?

It would be nice to be able to install eksctl from Conda Forge.

Why do you want this feature?

Conda Forge is a community-run, universal package registry that's used by conda , mamba, and micromamba (my favorite). These tools double as environment managers, so users can have different environments with different versions of eksctl installed.

This would also provide an easy one-line command to install eksctl, which works on any platform:

conda install eksctl
# also works with mamba, micromamba

Next steps

The process for uploading and maintaining a package is a little complicated:

  • Create a recipe file - this is Conda Forge's way of defining how a package is built on any given OS and CPU arch
  • Create a new PR on conda-forge/staged-recipes repo with this recipe
  • Add other recipe maintainers

After that PR is merged, it will create a new repo like conda-forge/eksctl-feedstock. Each release requires a PR to update the recipe, and once this PR is merged into any branch on the feedstock, the release is automatically published.

I don't think maintainers should be expected to keep the feedstock maintained beyond a best effort basis. Conda Forge is community governed by design and we should be open to adding other maintainers to help publish each release.

Conda Forge releases can also be automated with AI. I have a set of skills already : dlqqq/conda-forge-skills.
