fix: read MCPgError from __context__ too when surfacing tool errors - #358
Conversation
Follow-up to #356 (CodeRabbit nitpick, missed before that merge): the MCPgError lookup now uses exc.__cause__ or exc.__context__, like the validation branch above it, so an implicit raise inside an except block still gives the client the domain message. Test: test_call_tool_surfaces_mcpg_error_found_only_in_exception_context. Summary
The change improves error handling by considering both cause and context when extracting MCPgError from exceptions, which is correct. The changelog is updated accordingly. However, the added test incorrectly patches the method under test, invalidating the test.

The change also promises that the audit record contains the domain message. The current assertions cover only the client-visible
ToolError. Capture the audit event and assert that its error contains the provider message rather than the generic SDK message. As per coding guidelines, unit tests must “assert the operation's result and relevant interactions or rejection behavior.”🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Review on #358 (CodeRabbit nitpick): the test now also checks that the audit event has status error and carries the domain message, not the SDK's generic text. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XrLEbkf9BAxrqFTBfcU48z

Nitpick (assert the audit message): done in ebe1dbf. The test captures |
Why
I missed a CodeRabbit nitpick on #356 before that PR merged.
AuditedMCPServer.call_toolsurfaces anMCPgErroras aToolError. But it looked only atexc.__cause__. If the SDK, or any code path, raisesUnexpectedToolErrorinside anexceptblock with nofrom, the domain error is only in__context__. Then the client gets the generic "Error executing tool ", and the audit log does not record the real message either.Change
exc if isinstance(exc, MCPgError) else (exc.__cause__ or exc.__context__). This is the same rule as the validation branch above it.Unreleasedentry is extended.Tests
test_call_tool_surfaces_mcpg_error_found_only_in_exception_context. It patchesMCPServer.call_toolto raiseUnexpectedToolErrorwith theMCPgErroronly in__context__. The test fails onmainand passes with this change.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
