  • Starting an org or adding people to one, on the web and the API, now finds people whatever the case of their handles, like @handle URLs since fix: open profiles and commits whatever the handle's case #1286 (nunomaduro used to be refused for NunoMaduro).
  • One UsersByHandleQuery replaces the copy in the 4 org requests: the exact case wins when a stale profile holds the handle in another case, and unknown handles still answer "The selected members.N is invalid."
  • The same person twice in another case is refused as a duplicate (distinct:ignore_case).
  • Back-end only, so no screenshots.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Organization creation and member invitations now recognize handles regardless of capitalization, so users can be added even when the submitted handle’s case differs from the stored handle.
    • When multiple stored handles differ only by capitalization, the matching handle with the same capitalization as the submitted value is selected when available.
    • Duplicate member handles that differ only by capitalization are rejected.
    • Unknown member handles now receive a validation error at the corresponding entry.

Walkthrough

Organization creation and member-add requests now resolve member handles case-insensitively through a shared query. The query prefers exact-case matches and preserves input order. Requests report unresolved members by index before continuing to remote-candidate checks.

Changes: Organization member handle lookup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve member handles
app/Queries/UsersByHandleQuery.php
The new query finds user profiles by case-insensitive handle, prefers exact-case matches, and returns matched users in the submitted order.
Validate and use resolved members
app/Http/Requests/CreateApiOrgMemberRequest.php, app/Http/Requests/CreateApiOrgRequest.php, app/Http/Requests/CreateOrgMemberRequest.php, app/Http/Requests/CreateOrgRequest.php
The four request classes reject case-insensitive duplicates, add exists errors for unresolved member indexes, and use the shared query to retrieve members.
Test handle matching and validation
tests/Feature/Controllers/Api/OrgControllerTest.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/Api/OrgMemberControllerTest.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/OrgControllerTest.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/OrgMemberControllerTest.php
Feature tests cover case-insensitive matching, exact-case selection, case-insensitive duplicates, and errors for unknown members.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in app/Http/Requests/CreateApiOrgMemberRequest.php: Imports UsersByHandleQuery and removes the profile-type, Eloquent builder, validation-rule, and Exists imports used by the removed inline profile lookup and existence rule.
  • observed — Modified behavior in app/Http/Requests/CreateApiOrgMemberRequest.php: The rules return annotation no longer includes Exists. The members.* rule replaces case-sensitive distinctness and a profile-existence check restricted to user profiles with case-insensitive distinctness.
  • observed — Modified behavior in app/Http/Requests/CreateApiOrgMemberRequest.php: after() now resolves members before the remote-candidate checks, adds an exists validation failure for each requested index absent from the resolved collection, and returns if those failures exist.
  • observed — Modified behavior in app/Http/Requests/CreateApiOrgMemberRequest.php: members() now delegates handle lookup to UsersByHandleQuery instead of querying users through profiles, then sorting results into request order.

Nitpick Add a test for an unknown handle that precedes a valid one.

149-156: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a test for an unknown handle that precedes a valid one.

The new test and the existing org-creation tests put the unknown handle after a valid handle, or submit only one unknown handle. A change that reindexes the result of UsersByHandleQuery::get() would still pass all of them. For [unknown, valid], the error would move from members.0 to members.1, and no test checks that position.

CreateOrgRequest checks each submitted index against members(). With the current key-preserving result, [unknown, valid] reports members.0. With a reindexed result, the valid user takes key 0, so index 1 fails instead. The existing [valid, unknown] case reports members.1 under both implementations, so it cannot tell them apart.

Add a test that pins the error to the unknown member's own index. Append it after the existing test in tests/Feature/Controllers/OrgControllerTest.php:

Suggested fix
+it('refuses an unknown member before a known one at its own index', function (): void {
+    $mark = User::factory()->create();
+    [$nuno] = followersOf($mark, 1);
+
+    $this->actingAs($mark)->postJson(route('org.store'), ['members' => ['nobody-by-that-name', $nuno->handle]])
+        ->assertUnprocessable()
+        ->assertOnlyJsonValidationErrors('members.0');
+});

submit an unknown handle before a valid member to org.store; assert the request

@coderabbitai Added it: [unknown, valid] now has to fail on members.0, and it fails if the result gets reindexed.

@hbenabdallah Thanks for adding the regression test. Requiring [unknown, valid] to report an error at members.0 guards against reindexing the resolved results and assigning the error to the valid member.

Thanks for this! I'm exploring a solution at the database level instead: making profile handles case-insensitive in Postgres (citext) and unique whatever their case, which would be simpler and apply to every handle lookup at once (users and organizations), without per-query lowercasing or exact-case tie-breaks. I'll link the PR here once it's up; let's hold this one until then.
