feat: star and quote commits from notifications - #1311
When someone replied to, quoted, or mentioned you, starring or quoting their commit meant opening it first. Now those notifications have the same star and quote buttons as a commit card, so you can do both from the inbox.
Changes
The buttons show on notifications whose commit is the actor's own: replies, quotes, mentions, and first commits. They show on the summary row and on each row of an expanded group. They reuse CommitStarButton and CommitQuoteButton as they are, so star state is shared with every other place the commit shows.
The web inbox and the web group expansion now load each commit with withStarsFor($user), which gives starred and stars_count.
NotificationGroupsQuery::paginate no longer eager-loads commit. The web inbox loads it through the new withCommitStars, and the mobile API already loads it with loadMissing('commit.user', ...). This keeps the API payload unchanged and stops the web inbox from querying commits twice. The query-count test drops from 6 to 5 to match.
Out of scope: the mobile API, and star or quote on your own commits (star, approval, and rejection notifications).
Validation
Local:
pest --parallel: 5053 passed. The new test in NotificationControllerTest fails without the backend change.
phpstan, pint --test, rector --dry-run, tsc --noEmit, and bun run test:lint pass.
In a browser on seed data, I starred a reply from the inbox. The request returned 200, the button switched to pressed, and the page stayed on /notifications. I quoted a mention, which created a commit whose quoted_commit_id is the mentioned commit. I also starred a row inside an expanded group.
Hosted CI: pending on this PR.

Playwright with Chromium in iPhone 13 emulation (390x844, touch), not hardware. Tapping star toggled it on and off, and the page stayed on /notifications. Tapping quote opened the dialog, which fits the width with Quote visible. The on-screen keyboard and safe areas were not exercised.

CODE: PASS. No blocking findings. I declined two nits. The quote preview opened from a notification shows text only, with no images or link card, because loading those would add queries on every inbox page. On a grouped row the buttons act on the newest commit, whose text is the excerpt on that row.
VISUAL: PASS. One nit: tap targets are about 24px tall, the same as on the commit card, so I left them unchanged.
Limitations
The quote dialog's preview of a quoted reply leaves out its images and link card. The quote itself is created correctly.
Mobile was checked in emulation only.

Added quote and star actions to notification items for replies, quoted commits, mentions, and first commits. These actions are available in both compact and graph layouts.
Bug Fixes
Notifications and notification groups now display whether you have starred a commit and its total star count consistently.
Replies, quotes, mentions and first commits in the inbox get the same
star and quote buttons as a commit card. The web inbox and its group
expansion now load each commit with whether the user starred it and its
star count. The mobile API payload is unchanged.
Notification queries now load recipient-specific star data for commits. The notification page displays star and quote actions for reply, quote, mention, and first-commit notifications in compact and graph layouts.

Summary
Load commit star data app/Queries/NotificationGroupsQuery.php, app/Http/Controllers/NotificationController.php, app/Http/Controllers/NotificationGroupController.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/NotificationControllerTest.php, tests/Unit/Queries/NotificationGroupsQueryTest.php
The query loads commits with recipient-specific star data. Controllers apply this loading to notification results. Feature tests check commit.starred and commit.stars_count; the query-count expectation changes to five.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to d42a9
No merge-blocking issue was found. Adding an unstarred-recipient test would strengthen coverage.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to d42a9
The change is limited to commits already represented in a recipient’s notifications and reuses existing star and quote permissions. No new authorization bypass or security-relevant state-transition failure was established in the inspected paths.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The added interaction surface is account-scoped: recipients act on commits already represented in their own relevant notifications. The new payload fields expose aggregate star counts and the recipient’s own star membership, not another account’s private starred list.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The notification UI does not become the authorization boundary. Existing star requests check commit visibility and reject self-starring; quote creation validates the referenced commit through the existing visibility rule. The existing authenticated mutation routes and their throttling or posting controls remain in use.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Repeated notification controls share per-commit star state and mutation coordination. Database uniqueness and transactional star operations contain duplicate writes. The reused quote composer preserves drafts on ordinary failure or cancellation, clears them after success, and handles invalidated targets; quote persistence remains transactional. Quote creation’s existing non-idempotent submission semantics are not introduced by this PR.

The current test does not detect a recipient-specific false-positive. It only checks starred=true after the authenticated recipient has starred the commit.
Adding a second recipient who has not starred the same commit, while another user has starred it, would materially cover this missing case for both notification endpoints. This is not duplicated by the existing commit and reply endpoint tests because those tests do not exercise notification responses.
