The README tab reads repos/{login}/{login}/readme using the GitHub login looked up from the account id, but the empty state and the "README.md on GitHub" link used the /dev/null handle. The two can differ after a rename on GitHub or when an old handle was taken by someone else, so the page could tell you to create, or link you to, the wrong repository. The query now remembers the login it fetched with and the page uses it for the repository name and link, keeping the handle for the @mention. Also renames the component's username prop, which held the handle.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Profile README links now use the repository named after the GitHub login, even when it differs from the profile handle. If the GitHub login cannot be retrieved, the profile handle is used instead.
    • Other profile tabs remain unaffected.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that a profile README comes from the repository named after the GitHub login, which may differ from the profile handle after a GitHub rename.

Walkthrough

The profile README now uses the GitHub login as its repository name when available. The profile handle remains separate and serves as a fallback. The controller supplies the repository name only on the README tab.

Changes: Profile README repository identity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve the GitHub repository name
app/Queries/GitHubReadmeQuery.php, tests/Unit/Queries/GitHubReadmeQueryTest.php
GitHubReadmeQuery returns the cached GitHub login or falls back to the profile handle. It caches a fetched login for one day. The tests cover the login, fallback, and cache reuse.
Pass repository identity to the profile page
app/Http/Controllers/UserController.php, resources/js/pages/user/show.tsx, tests/Feature/Controllers/UserControllerTest.php
The controller supplies readmeRepository on the README tab and null on other tabs. The page preserves the prop across tab requests and uses the handle when the repository name is null. The feature tests cover both tab states and a handle that differs from the login.
Use the repository name in README content and links
resources/js/components/profile-readme.tsx, resources/js/pages/user/show.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
ProfileReadme receives separate handle and repository values. It uses the repository name in current-user instructions and README links, and the handle in the message for other accounts. The knowledge base identifies the GitHub login as the repository name.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 2dc61

The README repository name is carried through to the profile view, and no actionable merge risk is identified.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 2dc61

The change normally corrects README repository names and links. However, a cached GitHub login can outlive the README content. If someone claims that login after the original account renames, their README could appear on the original account’s profile. Existing HTML sanitization limits executable content but does not establish account ownership.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new day-long login cache can make another account’s repository authoritative for an existing profile. After a cached login is renamed and reassigned, a signed-image README expires after four minutes, but fetch() still requests the former login’s repository. Its sanitized response is stored under the original profile’s github_id without verifying repository ownership. Base re-resolved the immutable ID before each README refresh, so this introduces a substantially longer cross-account substitution window.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified attack is scoped to profiles whose cached former GitHub login becomes attacker-controlled. It affects content attributed to those profiles and visible to public readers. It does not establish arbitrary profile selection, server execution, or credential access.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A feasible sequence is: cache the original login and a signed-image README; the account renames; an attacker acquires the old login and creates its matching profile repository; after the four-minute HTML expiry, a public request fetches that repository using the still-cached login. The response is then attributed to the original profile. Attacker content without signed images can receive the ordinary one-day HTML TTL, extending persistence beyond the login cache’s remaining lifetime.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The initial identity lookup remains anchored to immutable github_id, and the public route and allowed tab values are unchanged. Fresh lookup failures have explicit fallback behavior. Once a nonempty login is cached, however, README refreshes bypass that identity lookup and accept the repository body without an owner-ID comparison.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep immutable account ownership authoritative at each README refresh: re-resolve the login or verify repository ownership against github_id before accepting content. Bind cached HTML and displayed repository identity to the same verified ownership result rather than independently expiring mutable-name state.

Comment thread app/Queries/GitHubReadmeQuery.php Outdated
A README cached before the login was had no login to name its
repository after, so the link fell back to the handle until the README
cache expired. The login is now looked up by account id and cached on
its own for a day, so it is always found, and fetching a README again
reuses it instead of asking GitHub for the login each time.
