Visual evidence

/@mnapoli as a guest, against a local database, with the real GitHub contributor list (mnapoli is a contributor). Before is production at eb5a542, after is this branch at 5877391. Captured with Playwright (headless Chromium).

The label links to https://github.com/dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh/pulls?q=is:pr+is:merged+author:mnapoli in a new tab. Profiles of people who aren't contributors look like the before shots.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Developer profiles now display a “/dev/null contributor” label when the developer is listed as a repository contributor. The label links to their merged pull requests on GitHub.
    • Contributor status is matched to the developer’s GitHub account, including if their account name changes.
    • The label may take over an hour to appear after a first merge, depending on GitHub’s update timing. It is hidden when GitHub is unavailable.

Profiles of people GitHub lists as contributors to the repository show a
/dev/null contributor label beside their level, which opens their merged
pull requests. It reads the contributor list the About page already
caches, as a deferred prop in its own group, so a slow GitHub neither
holds up the profile nor the who-to-follow suggestions.

Walkthrough

User profiles now receive a deferred contributor login through a GitHub account ID match. Matching profiles show a /dev/null contributor link to merged pull requests in the current repository.

Changes: Profile Contributor Label

Layer / File(s) Summary
Contributor lookup and deferred profile data
app/Queries/ContributorsQuery.php, app/Http/Controllers/UserController.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/UserControllerTest.php, tests/Feature/ContextualSuggestedUsersTest.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/Api/SuggestedUserControllerTest.php
ContributorsQuery returns the login for a matching GitHub account ID, or null when no account matches or retrieval fails. UserController provides the lookup as a deferred prop in the contributors group. Tests cover matching, nonmatching, retrieval failure, and deferred-prop loading.
Profile link and documentation
resources/js/pages/user/show.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
When contributorLogin is present, the profile shows a link to the current repository’s merged-pull-request search for that login. The documentation describes contributor matching and update timing.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 5dc2c

The contributor badge and merged-pull-request link follow the current account identity, with no actionable merge-blocking risk established.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5dc2c

The contributor label uses the profile’s existing GitHub identity and fails without blocking the profile. Profile visits can now also trigger a shared GitHub lookup when its cache expires. The lookup was already available through a public page, but the effect of additional concurrent requests in production is not established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new public profile caller may increase concurrent misses of the shared contributor cache. Misses are not visibly coalesced, so concurrent requests can duplicate GitHub fetches and consume the shared API budget. The same fetch was already publicly reachable from the about page; production amplification is unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Guests can cause a profile’s deferred lookup to use the repository-wide cache and, on a miss, the configured GitHub contributors endpoint. The public about page already exposed that same fetch path; the new caller principally expands where normal traffic reaches it.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The route selects a stored user, the server matches GitHub IDs against contributor data, and the client receives only a matched login for a conditional link. The link targets github.com and uses the configured repository.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — GitHub HTTP errors produce a short-lived failed-cache value and no contributor login, leaving the profile’s conditional link absent. Success and failure caching bound sequential repeat fetches, but do not visibly coalesce concurrent misses.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If production profile traffic makes concurrent expiry misses significant, consider coalescing contributor refreshes or bounding their rate, and measure the shared GitHub API budget before changing the cache policy.

…Hub login

The contributor list matches the account by GitHub ID, so it still finds
someone who renamed on GitHub before their profile synced, but the link
searched by the stale handle. The deferred prop now carries the login
GitHub reports, and the link searches by it.
