Summary

Two gaps against the data guideline ("everything about a person is erased with their account and included in their export"):

  • Deleting an account left its sessions behind. sessions.user_id has no foreign key, so nothing cascades. Each row keeps the IP address and browser of a device the person used. The web delete only invalidates the current session, and the API delete invalidates none, so the rest stayed until session garbage collection got to them.
  • The export left out data we store about the user: their scheduled commits, the reports they filed, the reactions they left on messages, and the images they sent in remotes. The knowledge base listed these as not included. DeleteUser already erases all of them.

Changes

  • DeleteUser deletes the user's sessions rows inside the same transaction, next to the profile.
  • CreateExport adds:
    • scheduled_commits: body, poll, link, the image descriptions, the commit it became, and the scheduled, submitted, canceled and created times.
      • Scheduled images have no serving route, so their storage paths stay out; only the descriptions the user wrote leave.
    • reports_filed: commit, reason, details and time. Whether a moderator dismissed a report stays out, like the rest of moderation.
    • message_reactions: who the conversation is with, the emoji, and the time.
      • The messages export already resolves "who the conversation is with". That lookup is now shared in recipients().
    • images on each exported message, as links to the authorizing image route, in order.
  • schema_version stays at 3. Earlier additive fields (devices, remote pins) kept it too.
  • The knowledge base's export and deletion sections now match.

Validation

Local, PHP 8.5 and PostgreSQL 18:

  • composer test:lint: passed.
  • composer test:types (phpstan): passed.
  • composer test:type-coverage: passed, 100%.
  • tests/Feature/Controllers/ExportControllerTest.php and tests/Unit/Actions/DeleteUserTest.php: all new and updated tests pass. CreateExport and DeleteUser are at 100% line coverage (216/216, 61/61).
    • One existing test there, exports ssh key fingerprints and sessions…, can't run on my machine: the SSH key factory needs PHP's sodium extension, which I don't have locally. CI has it.
  • The full suite doesn't complete locally. It stops at a Pest\Exceptions\DatasetMissing in tests/Feature/ScheduledCommitsTest.php that also happens on an untouched production checkout, so it isn't caused by this change. Hosted CI is the reference.

Independent review

A separate reviewer did a read-only review of base 411fa563 against head cdb60bd2, checking privacy (no internal paths, no other users' data), scoping, transaction placement and the KB, and gave a PASS. It suggested stable tiebreakers for the two new ordered lists, which are added. Two optional notes stay as they are: scheduled_commits and reports_filed load with get() rather than streaming (both are small per user), and the conversation lookup runs once for messages and once for reactions.

Limitations

  • Sessions already orphaned by earlier account deletions aren't cleaned up here. Session garbage collection removes them once they expire. A one-off cleanup could delete sessions rows whose user_id no longer exists, if that's wanted.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Data exports now include links to images and voice notes in sent messages, reactions you’ve left, scheduled commits with polls, links and image descriptions, and reports you’ve filed.
    • Exports exclude other people’s replies and received messages, ban records, and whether moderators dismissed your reports.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Deleting an account now also removes its associated sessions.

…ut it

Deleting an account left its sessions behind, each with the IP address and browser of a device, as sessions have no foreign key to cascade. The export left out the scheduled commits, the reports filed, the message reactions, and the images sent in remotes.

Walkthrough

The account data export now includes message images, reactions, scheduled commits, and filed reports. Account deletion now removes the user’s database sessions.

Changes: Account data export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Export message images and reactions
app/Actions/CreateExport.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/ExportControllerTest.php, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
The export includes message image URLs sorted by position and reactions made by the user, with the conversation recipient, emoji, and timestamp. The export documentation describes the included data and exclusions.
Export scheduled commits and filed reports
app/Actions/CreateExport.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/ExportControllerTest.php
The export includes scheduled commit text and metadata, including polls and image descriptions, but not image files. It also includes reports filed by the user without moderator-dismissal status.

Account deletion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Delete user sessions
app/Actions/DeleteUser.php, tests/Unit/Actions/DeleteUserTest.php, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
The deletion action removes the user’s sessions before deleting the user record. The test checks that another user’s session remains.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: xheaven, nunomaduro, brendt

Merge Risk: Low · up to cdb60

Account deletion now removes a user's database session rows, and the export covers more of the user's data. Sessions held by a non-database session driver would not be erased, but the default configuration is covered. The remaining risk is small; confirm that production uses the database driver.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to cdb60

The added export data remains scoped to the signed-in user, and image links retain their existing access checks. Session cleanup improves account deletion for the default database configuration. Assurance remains incomplete for alternative session storage and concurrent requests during deletion.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated scope is the exporting or deleted account's records and its authored message media. Explicit ownership predicates limit the changed queries; the session cleanup does not issue a table-wide deletion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Exported message-image URLs use the existing authenticated web route rather than granting a new bearer capability. The image request checks message visibility, including conversation membership and history visibility, and rejects unauthorized access as not found. These controls are unchanged from the PR base.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The account-delete route does not add synchronization with general session writers. The DELETE therefore does not itself establish a concurrency barrier. Whether an already-running request can recreate a removed row remains unresolved; no new authentication bypass or worsened exposure was demonstrated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the supported session-storage assumption explicit or align erasure with the authoritative configured store. Validate the locked session handler's behavior when a request overlaps account deletion before treating session erasure as concurrency-complete.

Honor the configured session driver when deleting a user's sessions.

DeleteUser::handle removes session rows only from the database sessions table. config/session.php reads the driver from SESSION_DRIVER, which defaults to database. If a deployment sets SESSION_DRIVER to another driver, such as file or redis, this query does not remove that user's sessions. The account deletion then leaves those sessions in place.

The default driver is database, so the default configuration is covered. Decide whether non-database drivers are supported:

  • If they are not supported, enforce the database-only requirement. Add a configuration check or document the requirement.
  • If they are supported, the deletion needs driver-specific cleanup. The sessions table's user_id column is set only by the database driver, so a different cleanup approach is needed for other drivers. This requires a design decision, so no safe localized edit is proposed here.
