feat: list related commits under every thread - #1069
When you open a commit, the page now ends with up to three commits from other threads that talk about the same thing. They look like any other commit cards. You can open, star, and report them, and j and k walk into them from the thread.
why
People post the same feelings and the same wins a few days apart and never see each other. A thread about a brutal day sits next to "I'm tired boss" and "too tired" and nobody knows. Search can find them, but only if you think to search. This puts them one scroll below the thread.
before and after
Taken on a local instance. The post bodies are real public posts from dev-null.sh, attributed to fake accounts. The vectors are real too. I ran php artisan commits:embed so every post went through text-embedding-3-small, and the last post was made through the composer and got its vector from the normal EmbedCommit job.
before
The thread ends after its replies.
after
The same thread, followed by the three nearest commits from other threads.
another thread
A post about side projects, with three neighbours.
a post made during the run
"Exhausted after a week of on-call", typed into the composer. The queue worker gave it a vector, and its rail lists Nora's "most exhausting work day" thread from the before and after images above.
nothing nearby
A post with no neighbour inside the cutoff shows no rail at all.
how it picks them
the query
It uses the vectors EmbedCommit already stores for search. One pgvector query per page, no OpenAI call when reading. Two commits count as related when their cosine distance is 0.60 or less.
the cutoff
I did not know what a good cutoff was, so I measured it on 281 real posts.
Under 0.45, pairs are near duplicates.
Between 0.45 and 0.60, they share a topic.
Past 0.60, they stop making sense together.
I started at 0.45 and the rail was empty almost everywhere, so I moved it to 0.60. Matches near 0.60 are "same subject", not "same sentence". If the rail turns out too chatty or too quiet in production, MAX_DISTANCE in RelatedCommitsQuery is the one number to change.
what it leaves out
The rail only shows what you could find through search.
Nothing pending, deleted, muted, or across a block.
Nothing from the thread you are reading.
Only top-level commits.
No rail when nothing qualifies or the commit has no vector yet. There is no empty state.
loading
The thread renders first and the client fetches the rail afterwards, the way /search works. The signed API has the same list at GET /api/v1/commits/{commit}/related.
checks
Browser-checked on an isolated instance, once with hand-set vectors at known distances and once with real vectors from commits:embed.
The full suite passes at 100% coverage with Pint, Rector, tsc, lint, and the node tests.
PHPStan has the same seven pre-existing errors as production.
A composer hint ("you already said this") could use the same query later.

New Features
Commit pages now show a “Related commits” section with up to three similar commits from other threads.
Suggestions exclude pending commits and commits hidden by visibility restrictions or mute settings. The section is omitted when no close matches are available.
A unit vector in the plane of axes 0 and 1 whose distance to the
one-hot vector at index 0 is exactly the given value.

RelatedCommitsQuery returns up to three top-level commits from other
threads whose embedding is within 0.45 cosine distance of the given
commit, nearest first, scoped like search by visibility, mutes and
blocks. The source vector is read in a subselect so it never leaves
the database.

Takes the url rather than the commit id so the node test runner, which
cannot resolve Wayfinder's imports, can load it. Rethrows only an
abort, so a stale response never lands on a newer page.

…osts
On 281 real posts embedded with text-embedding-3-small, every pair under
0.45 is a near duplicate, so the rail stayed empty on most pages. Pairs
between 0.45 and 0.60 share a topic without repeating each other, and
past 0.60 they come apart. At 0.45, 16 of 230 top-level posts had a rail.
At 0.60, 170 do.

Summary
Select similar commits app/Queries/RelatedCommitsQuery.php, tests/Pest.php, tests/Unit/Queries/RelatedCommitsQueryTest.php, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
The query selects up to three top-level commits within the configured embedding distance, filters by visibility and muted authors, and loads card data. Tests cover selection, filtering, and returned relations. The knowledge-base entry describes the feature and candidate exclusions.
Authorize and serve related commits app/Http/Requests/List*RelatedCommitsRequest.php, app/Http/Controllers/*/RelatedCommitController.php, routes/*.php, app/Providers/AppServiceProvider.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/*RelatedCommitControllerTest.php
Web and API routes serve related commits through separate controllers. Requests authorize access to the routed commit. The web route uses a per-user or per-IP rate limit. Feature tests cover responses, access cases, and rate limiting.
Fetch and display related commits resources/js/types/commit.ts, resources/js/lib/related-commits.ts, resources/js/hooks/use-related-commits.ts, resources/js/components/related-commits.tsx, resources/js/pages/commit/show.tsx, tests/Unit/RelatedCommits.test.ts
The commit page renders related commits when the displayed commit is not deleted. The component fetches and displays results. Flash events update the hidden commit IDs, which the hook filters from results. Tests cover fetch outcomes and hidden-ID updates.

Possibly related issues
Proposal: mute words, not just people #709: The issue requests muted-word filtering in suggested commits. This change adds a related-commit suggestion surface but does not implement that filtering.
Possibly related PRs
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1168: Its channel-based visibility filtering and reveal behavior can change which commits this feature may return or display.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#997: Related commits use CommitBuilder::withCardDataFor and render CommitCard; the PR adds event data to that card-data flow.

Merge Risk: Low · up to d2524
At sufficiently large scale, some eligible related commits may be omitted; explicitly configuring the scan budget would make retrieval reliable.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to d2524
The new discovery flow preserves the existing visibility rules and limits returned results. No introduced authorization bypass or sensitive-data disclosure was established. Public similarity queries add database work, and their production capacity and rate-limit failure behavior remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Unauthenticated callers can initiate similarity work against the shared commit database for visible source commits. Returned results are capped at three, but that cap does not establish a production bound on database work. The new controllers expose read operations, not mutation or administrative authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Both request classes deny invisible sources as not found. The shared policy permits authors to see their own commits and otherwise requires approval and no block; candidate selection independently applies viewer visibility and mute filtering. These policies predate the new endpoints.
observed — The web route has a 60-per-minute user-or-guest-IP limiter. The API instead inherits 120-per-minute authenticated-user or 60-per-minute guest-IP limits. Middleware priority explicitly places signed authentication before throttling; the two routes do not share a related-commit-specific budget.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The web tests assert rejection of pending, blocked, and deleted sources, plus sequential guest-IP exhaustion and separation. The new limiter delegates counting, expiration, concurrency, and backing-store failure behavior to the existing framework rather than implementing custom state management.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Validate the combined web/API similarity-query budget against representative database load, and document whether separate budgets are intentional. Verify authenticated isolation, concurrent counting, expiration, and backing-store failure behavior with the production rate-limit configuration.

Two issues need fixing before merging:
app/Queries/RelatedCommitsQuery.php:35–45: the HNSW candidate list can fill with replies that topLevel() subsequently removes. I reproduced zero recommendations with 80 closer replies, three eligible roots at distance 0.20, and 1,200 unrelated roots. The default plan used commits_embedding_index; iterative scanning and an exact scan each returned all three matches. Please make filtered retrieval reliable and add coverage that exercises the indexed path.
resources/js/hooks/use-related-commits.ts:12–23: deleting your own related commit and clicking Undo restores it in the database, but its card remains collapsed until refresh. The collection only reloads when the source commit ID changes. Please integrate the related list with the existing deletion/restoration flow so Undo restores the visible card, and cover that behavior.
The three-card cap seems reasonable. I’d resolve the query behavior before judging whether 0.60 needs adjustment.
…lters
The HNSW index returns a fixed number of candidates before the filters run,
so closer replies or hidden commits could use them all up and leave the rail
empty. An iterative scan keeps reading the index until LIMIT commits pass.
Needs pgvector 0.8 or later.
Signed-off-by: Younes <git@younes.io>
The rail hid a deleted card for the rest of the page view. It now listens to
the delete and restore flashes, so Undo brings the card back open.

Each commit page asks for its related commits, a vector index scan. The route gets its own budget of 60 a minute per user or guest IP, rather than the search limit, which is sized for paid embedding calls.
Signed-off-by: Younes <git@younes.io>
Configure the HNSW scan budget for filtered candidates.
hnsw.iterative_scan = strict_order preserves distance order, but it stops when hnsw.max_scan_tuples is reached. pgvector defaults this budget to 20,000 tuples. The candidate query filters replies and hidden commits during that scan, then limits the result to three rows. If more than 20,000 closer filtered commits precede three eligible roots, the query can return fewer than three related commits. The outer distance filter cannot restore those rows.
Set hnsw.max_scan_tuples explicitly at the existing statement boundary in RelatedCommitsQuery, using a deployment-supported budget or an exact-search fallback.

Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 10 included reviews per hour; 8 remain after this review.
Empty suggestions (7fcc681): the query now keeps scanning the vector index until three top-level commits pass the visibility and mute filters, and only then applies the 0.60 cutoff. A new test puts 80 closer replies in front of three valid roots and checks that the roots still come back. This uses hnsw.iterative_scan, so production needs pgvector 0.8 or later.
Undo leaving the card collapsed (adb5b0d): the rail now listens for the restore flash and shows the commit again, open, with no refresh needed. It's covered by unit tests and a browser check on desktop and mobile, in light and dark.
Also added a dedicated rate limit on the web route (d25243c) after CodeRabbit's note.
Re the hnsw.max_scan_tuples note on RelatedCommitsQuery: leaving it at pgvector's default on purpose. Missing rows needs 20,000 replies or hidden commits closer than the three nearest visible top-level commits, and even then the rail just shows fewer suggestions. The cap is what bounds the cost of a query that runs on every commit page view, and an exact-search fallback would read the whole table, which the index exists to avoid.

@younes-io I'm just seeing this now, but just for future reference: Laravel AI SDK is a dependency on this project and offers similarity search out of the box. The commit search query already is an example of this! Missed this PR, but I'd like to refactor this.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@paulinevos ah i didn't know this, thanks for the info. sure, let me know if i can help refactor this.
UPDATE:
i looked into this with the help of claude.
the orderByVectorDistance / whereVectorSimilarTo helpers are laravel framework query builder methods rather than the ai sdk. the sdk's part is turning a typed term into a vector, which is what CommitSearchQuery needs. this query has no term, its question is a vector already in the commits table, so there's nothing for the sdk to do here.
i did try to move it onto the builder helpers. they all take the vector from php and bind it as json, none can point at a row, so the first cost is loading the source commit's embedding (which CommitBuilder strips from every load on purpose) and sending ~30 kb back as bindings per page view. the bigger cost is that whereVectorSimilarTo puts the 0.60 cutoff in the where clause. with hnsw.iterative_scan on, a where cutoff keeps the index scanning until it finds three matches, and a commit with nothing nearby is the common case for this rail. measured on 5000 random vectors in a local pgvector 0.8.7:
nothing within the cutoff
rows read
time
current query (cutoff after the limit)
4
0.8 ms
whereVectorSimilarTo shape, iterative scan on
all 4897
25.7 ms
whereVectorSimilarTo shape, iterative scan off
40
0.7 ms
on production that would read up to the 20k scan budget per lonely commit. turning iterative scan off fixes the time but brings back the empty rail when closer replies eat all 40 candidates, which the "behind many closer replies" test pins.
so i'd leave the raw <=> subselect, and i'll add a line to the docblock saying why the builder helpers don't fit so the next reader doesn't retrace this. happy to work on it if you still see something i'm missing.
