Description of your changes

Adds a design one-pager for crossplane xrd lint.

The proposal:

  • crossplane xrd lint checks XRDs against best practices for API design. It sits on top of the existing validity checks (Report an XRD schema Kubernetes would reject as non-structural #301) and does not replace them.
  • Configuration follows the ESLint model. Each rule has a severity and options, set in .crossplane-lint.yaml. Findings can be suppressed inline with disable comments. There are no presets; every rule has its own default.
  • Built-in rules:
    • three on by default as error, for things that actually misbehave in Crossplane (strict status fields, missing x-kubernetes-list-type)
    • xrd/no-bools on as warn
    • eight design-preference rules off by default
  • Breaking-change detection is a category of rules (xrd-diff/*) that runs when --old supplies the previous XRD.
  • Custom rules are CEL expressions in the config file. A rule can match a property, an XRD, or a diff between versions, and can take an optional filter. The document includes worked examples.

Feedback is especially welcome on the rule set and its defaults, and on the CEL variables available to custom rules.

I have:

  • Read and followed Crossplane's contribution process.
  • Run ./nix.sh flake check to ensure this PR is ready for review. Design document only.
  • Added or updated unit tests. Design document only; no code.
  • Linked a PR or a docs tracking issue to document this change. Not applicable to a design proposal.
  • Added backport release-x.y labels to auto-backport this PR. Not applicable.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a design proposal for an alpha crossplane xrd lint command. It specifies input handling, configurable built-in and custom CEL rules, optional breaking-change checks, output and exit conditions, and a Go extension API.

The proposal has two gaps to fix before the design is accepted. The breaking-change check would miss removed API versions. A custom error rule that fails to evaluate would not fail CI. Since this is only a design document, neither gap affects runtime behavior today.

Clarify whether diff evaluates the schema root.

The document defines the root path as "", but does not state that diff includes it among paired property paths. The XRD-level example depends on filter: "path == ''" matching. State that the root is included, or define a separate XRD-level diff invocation.

each XRD. Old and new XRDs are paired by `metadata.name`, and each served
version of the new XRD is compared with the version of the same name in the
old. A new XRD with no old counterpart has no diff rules applied. An old
`apiextensions.crossplane.io/v1` XRD may be paired with a new `v2` XRD, so a
migration between the two can be checked. (proposed)

Include removed old versions in diff evaluation.

The pairing algorithm compares only served versions in the new XRD with same-name versions in the old XRD. If an old version is removed or no longer served, xrd-diff/no-version-removal never runs. Compare the union of old and new version names, or define a separate version-level diff pass.

Add a docs URL to custom-rule findings, or state when it may be omitted.

The design requires every finding to carry a docs URL, but the customRules schema has no field for one. Built-in rules get a DocsURL through the Go Meta type, so custom rules are the gap. Could you add an optional docsURL field to the custom-rule schema, or document when a custom finding may leave it out?

**Runtime errors** (proposed)
- `filter` or `expr` can fail while it is being evaluated, for example on a
missing key.
- Lint then reports a `warn` finding with rule ID `lint/rule-error` that names
the failing rule.
- The run never crashes, and the rule never passes silently.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not downgrade evaluation failures to an unconditional warning.

If an error custom rule fails during evaluation, lint/rule-error is reported as warn. With unlimited warnings, the command can exit successfully even though the rule did not evaluate. Preserve the configured severity or make rule-evaluation errors fail the run.
