feat(resolve): epic-close resolve for tickets epic-boundary pauses (DW-604) - #1014
An epic-close resolve: on a tickets run paused at epic-boundary, bmad-loop resolve <run> opens bmad-agent-po on the paused epic's closure. Then it verifies the epic folder and resumes.
Why
A chained (or any tickets) run pauses at every epic boundary, and the only remedy was closing the epic by hand and running resume. This gives the pause a guided close that is checked deterministically. The session's exit code is never trusted (DW-604).
How
Pure core: tickets_source.epic_close_target classifies the pause, and the epic-close prompt and the closure check are built from it.
Refactor: the resolve pre-session gates are extracted into _resolve_pre_session_gates, shared with the epic-close branch.
resolve --no-interactive verifies a hand-closed epic (done / dropped, no uncommitted change in the epic folder) and resumes. A plain resolve opens bmad-agent-po first. It refuses, still paused, on a failed check, a retrospective still owed, a missing skill, or a dev CLI with no interactive mode.
TUI: R, and Close with bmad-agent-po in the epic-closure viewer.
E2E (real tmux, zero tokens): the chain row's first epic boundary answered by resolve --resume.
Testing
uv run pytest -q -n logical at this PR's tip: 17684 passed, 124 skipped.
uv run pyright (1.1.411): 0 errors.
CI.
Changelog
## [Unreleased] / Added: the epic-close resolve (DW-604).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an epic-closure flow for ticket runs paused at an epic boundary. Resolve can launch the closure agent and resume after verifying the epic is marked done or dropped and, where versioned, its folder has no uncommitted changes.
Added a TUI action to start epic closure from eligible pauses.
Bug Fixes
Failed verification, pending retrospectives, or unavailable interactive support leave the run paused. The agent’s exit status alone does not confirm closure.
Documentation
Updated CLI, TUI, and ticket workflow guides with closure options, verification requirements, and pause behavior.
Tickets-mode runs paused at epic-boundary can use resolve to launch an epic-close session. The run resumes only after verification confirms the epic is done or dropped and, for versioned stores, its folder is clean. The TUI offers the close action for eligible pauses.
Resolve can launch bmad-agent-po, then checks epic status and folder cleanliness before journaling verification and offering to resume. Tests cover interactive and non-interactive flows, refusal paths, and a chained run.

dw ledger 1028/07 epic close resolve
feat(resolve): epic-close resolve for tickets epic-boundary pauses (DW-604)
Oct 29, 2026
…se prompt and check
The pure core of an epic-close resolve (EC-S1); nothing calls it yet but the
engine refactor.
- tickets_source.committed_epics(state): TicketsEngine._committed_epics lifted
with the same rule; the engine method delegates to it.
- tickets_source.path_overlaps: tickets_engine._overlaps lifted verbatim (it was
already a pure string function); the dirty-initiative gate imports it, and
resolve.epic_close_missing shares it, so the clean check and the gate agree on
what lies in a folder, nested-repo entries included.
- tickets_source.epic_close_target(state) -> EpicCloseTarget | EpicCloseRefusal,
from RunState alone, never parsing paused_reason: not tickets / a sweep / not
at epic-boundary -> refusal not-epic-close (EC-S2 falls through); no paused key
-> no-epic (cause F); a recorded closure -> target with its verdict and a
`rejected` property (A/B/C1); no closure on a committed epic -> retro-pending
(D/E); otherwise -> target with verdict None (C).
- resolve.epic_close_prompt: the one-line canonical `/bmad-agent-po ...` prompt
of design section 3, plain values in, no file read.
- resolve.epic_close_missing: design 4.4 with the human decision that clean
means the epic folder only; versioning "none" checks no dirt.
Decisions:
- D and E share one refusal code: telling them apart needs paused_reason, which
the classifier must not parse. The step says "has not run or is not committed:
clear what the pause names", and the refusal quotes the pause's own reason.
- EpicCloseTarget.rejected is a property over the verdict, not a field, so the
two cannot disagree.
- epic_close_missing keeps the four-argument signature the task names, so its
messages carry no slug or repo: "the epic reads <status>" and
"<epic_prefix>: uncommitted <paths>" (first five, then "and N more", as the
dirty-initiative gate prints). The CLI slice prefixes the slug/repo.
- epic_close_prompt raises ValueError on an unknown versioning or a versioned
store with no repo (fail loud). Under "none" it drops the commit step and
the clean-folder clause, since there is nothing to commit.
- Prompt paths are as_posix(), matching the resolve context's spelling.
Ablations performed: dropping the committed-epic arm fails the DE row; dropping
the sweep test fails the sweep row; treating "none" like "code-repo" fails the
three T2 dirty-inside rows; dropping the chained clause fails its assertion.
…epic-close session launcher
- cli: move the four entry refusals between the escalated-story checks and the
reverify dispatch (unreadable sweep ledger, sweep initiative pin, plugin
trust, early store topology for --reverify/--adopt-branch) verbatim into
`_resolve_pre_session_gates(args, project, run_dir, state)`; the store gate
now reads `reverify` from `args` itself. `cmd_resolve` calls it at the same
spot, so the epic-close branch can share it.
- cli: the identical isolation-conflict + store-topology pair `cmd_resolve`
took before the interactive session and again after the confirm is now
`_resolve_config_refusal(project, pol, state, paths)`, called at both sites;
the site-ordering comments stay at the call sites.
- resolve: `run_epic_close_session` launches the interactive bmad-agent-po
session attached like `run_session` and returns the process returncode,
which is for the journal only: the caller verifies the epic folder from
the tree. No marker file; NotImplementedError from an adapter with no
interactive mode propagates.
- tests: the portability guard's isolation/store refusal-site inventories
name the two extracted helpers instead of `cmd_resolve`.
BMAD_LOOP_EPIC_REF is not registered in envvars.py: it is a session-protocol
variable injected into the child session, like BMAD_LOOP_RUN_DIR and
BMAD_LOOP_STORY_KEY, and nothing in src/bmad_loop reads it back, so the
registry's carve-out applies.
…undary pause
- cli: `resolve <run> --no-interactive` with no mode flag (no --restore-patch,
--adopt-branch, --reverify, --abandon, --at-reset) classifies the pause with
`tickets_source.epic_close_target` right after the liveness gate. Only a
NOT_APPLICABLE refusal falls through to the escalation gate, so a plain
(interactive) resolve on an epic-boundary pause, a stories/sprint
epic-boundary pause and every other pause keep the
`not_escalation_pause_message` refusal unchanged.
- cli: `_resolve_epic_close` takes, in order: the classifier's refusal causes
(no-epic, retro-pending: exit 1 with the step and the quoted pause, nothing
journaled); `--story` must name the paused epic; `_resolve_pre_session_gates`;
the BMAD config read (exit 1 on a fault, no degrade) and
`_resolve_config_refusal`; the verify; a journal row; then `--no-resume`
hint, or the confirm (decline exits 0, still paused), a locked re-check of the
pause (same stage and key) and of liveness, the post-confirm plugin-trust
refusal on the re-read policy, the ctl-session detach, and
`_resume_paused_run`. The interactive bmad-agent-po session slots in between
the config gates and the verify.
- cli: `_epic_close_check` reads the epic row from the run's pinned tree
(`recorded_tree_pin` + `_status_ticket_tree(...).status()`, "absent" when no
row) and the dirt of the repo the recorded topology versions (`code-repo`:
`paths.repo_root`, `store-repo`: the topology's `store_repo`, `none`: no git
check), limited to the epic folder (`ticketlayout.epic_folder` under the
rebased `state.initiative_folder`), and decides with
`resolve.epic_close_missing`, each line prefixed `epic <slug>: `. Fail ->
`epic-close-unverified` {epic_ref, missing}, exit 1, still paused; pass ->
`epic-close-verified` {epic_ref, status}. Rows are appended under the run lock
as `_resolve_at_reset` does.
- tests: the guard's journal-kind inventory and run-state transaction set name
the two kinds and `_resolve_epic_close`.
Decisions:
- A tickets run can lack a recorded topology (`_run_store_topology` records {}
when there was no initiative folder at its start, and older state.json has
none): an empty or unknown versioning is refused (exit 1, nothing journaled),
as are a store-repo topology with no repo, an empty initiative_folder, an epic
folder that cannot be located, a tree read fault, and a chained run whose
config moved. These are `_EpicCloseUnverifiable`: no closure answers them, so
they write no journal row and print no "close it and commit" hint.
- `dirty_paths` keys are relative to the repo it reads (the tickets engine's
dirty-initiative gate reads them the same way), so the prefix is the resolved
epic folder relative to the resolved repo; a folder outside that repo is
refused rather than compared.
- A GitError is one missing line naming the repo, journaled as unverified.
- `missing` stays benign by name in the journal-field accounting: its prose
lines are not identifier-shaped, so `scrub_json` redacts them in a
diagnostics dump (a kind-scoped count row is refused by the guard for a name
already benign by name).
Ablations (performed):
- skip the `_epic_close_check` call (no missing lines): the open-epic, inside-
dirt and unrecorded-topology rows FAIL (the open epic resumes).
- pass "." (the whole checkout) as the dirt prefix: the outside-dirt row FAILS.
- route the retro-pending refusal to the verify: that row FAILS (it verifies
and resumes).
…hen verify and resume
- cli: the epic-close routing no longer requires `--no-interactive`: a plain
`resolve` with no mode flag on a tickets epic-boundary pause takes
`_resolve_epic_close` too. Mode flags fall through unchanged.
- cli: `_epic_close_check` is split. `_locate_epic_close` returns one
`_EpicCloseLocation`: tree pin, rebased initiative folder, epic folder,
versioning, repo and prefix. It raises `_EpicCloseUnverifiable` for the
preconditions no closure answers. `_epic_close_check(project, located, slug)`
reads the tree and the dirt. Both gestures locate after the config gates, so
`--no-interactive` keeps its order and messages.
- cli: in an interactive resolve, after the refusal causes, the `--story`
check, the pre-session gates and the config refusal, the following run in order:
- the skill probe: the dev profile's `skill_tree`/bmad-agent-po/SKILL.md must
exist, with the retro launch's rule (`if tree and not ...is_file()`). If it
does not, exit 1 before the claim, naming the path and `--no-interactive`.
A profile that fails to load also exits 1.
- the locate.
- `resolve.epic_close_prompt`, built from the located folders,
`ticketlayout.epic_file`/`retrospective_doc`, the target's verdict and
rejected flag, and `state.parent_initiative`. OSError/ValueError: exit 1.
- the control-window claim, taken as the escalation arm takes it: locked
liveness re-check, predecessor/claimed.
- the bypass dev adapter, with model and effort from
`pol.adapter.resolved("dev")`.
- `epic-close-session-start` {epic_ref, verdict, cli}, the launch line,
`resolve.run_epic_close_session`, then `epic-close-session-end`
{epic_ref, rc}.
- the policy, paths and `_resolve_config_refusal`, re-read and judged again.
- the existing verify, confirm and resume, unchanged.
- cli: a NotImplementedError from the session call only prints the
`--no-interactive` steer, hands the window back and exits 1. Any other
exception past the claim hands the window back and propagates.
- ticketlayout: `epic_file(initiative, slug)`, `<slug>.md` at the top of the
epic folder.
- tests: six interactive rows beside the `--no-interactive` ones:
- the session closes and commits the epic, exits 1, and the run resumes.
- the session exits 0 with the epic open: unverified.
- the skill is missing: refused before the claim.
- the adapter has no session mode: the window is handed back.
- a retro-pending pause: refused, no session.
- a chained run whose config moved: refused before the session.
The retro-pending state kwargs are now a shared `_retro_pending_kwargs()`.
The guard lists the two new kinds; `verdict` and `cli` are declared
kind-scoped on the start row (`rc` is benign by name).
Decisions:
- The session's exit code is journaled, never trusted: only the verify decides.
- The verify reads the location found before the session; the re-read after the
session only re-judges the config refusal, as `cmd_resolve` does.
- A refusal after the session returned does not hand the window back: the
session was usable, matching `cmd_resolve`'s post-session refusals.
- A config read fault after the session exits 1, as the entry read in this
branch does. It does not degrade the way `cmd_resolve`'s post-confirm read does.
- The prompt passed is the canonical `/bmad-agent-po ...` string:
`interactive_argv` renders it per CLI through `profile.render_prompt`.
- `cli` is the adapter's `profile.name`, falling back to `adapter.name`.
- The messages use the em dash and ellipsis of the escalation arm's lines.
- The chained row reuses `_epic_close_run` with
`parent_initiative=CHAIN_PARENT`. It is refused at the branch's BMAD config
read (`paths_for_state`), ahead of the locate, so no chain harness is built.
- `test_resolve_epic_boundary_other_gestures_keep_the_refusal` asserted that an
interactive tickets resolve on this pause is refused, which this change
removes. It now covers a stories run's pause under both gestures.
Ablations (performed):
- skip the `_epic_close_check` call after the session: the exit-zero row
FAILS (the open epic resumes).
- drop the skill probe: the skill-missing row FAILS (the session stub is called).
- route the retro-pending refusal to the session: the retro-pending row FAILS
("the epic-close session ran").
Behaviour:
- R (action_resolve_run) classifies the pause with
tickets_source.epic_close_target ahead of the escalation_resolvable
refusal. A closure target is gated on liveness (the escalation arm's
"may still be live" refusal), then confirmed ("close epic": open
bmad-agent-po for epic <slug>?, plus the held line on a rejected
closure) and launched through _launch_resolve(run_id), the plain
two-positional start_resolve_detached call. A refusal cause (retro
pending, no epic) notifies its step (warning, markup off) and stops.
Every other pause takes the existing path unchanged.
- The epic-closure viewer (p) offers "Close with bmad-agent-po" only on a
closure target; the verb gates on the multiplexer and liveness, then
launches the same plain resolve. A refusal cause shows no extra verb.
- PauseReasonModal takes an optional `actions` sequence of
(verb, label, variant) buttons after Resume; the default () keeps every
other caller's modal identical.
Decisions:
- The environment-pause arm stays first: an environment pause is never an
epic boundary, so the order only reads the CLI's own way.
- The DW-524 deferred-unit pointer is appended to the epic-close confirm
and refusal notices, as it is on the escalation ones.
- The viewer verb also checks _mux_missing before liveness, as the
re-verify picker's confirm does, since p itself does not gate on the
multiplexer.
Ablations (performed):
- drop the epic-close admission in action_resolve_run: R notifies "only
available for a run paused at an escalation" and the five R rows FAIL.
- drop the viewer's close-epic action: the viewer-offers row FAILS (no
button).
Row test_e2e_tickets_epic_close_resolve, a variant of the parent-initiative
chain row (children A then B, T1 store, worktree isolation) whose first epic
boundary is answered by `resolve <run> --resume` instead of a hand close.
- The fake build-auto gains a first branch for a `/bmad-agent-po` prompt: the
epic-close session the generic adapter launches attached through
`interactive_argv` (binary + rendered prompt, no bypass args in the E2E
profile), so no hook events and no task dir. It records its argv and cwd in
the run dir, parses the `Epic file:` path and the commit repo out of the
prompt, flips the epic file to `status: done` and commits it there; a
`.no-close` marker in the run dir makes it exit 0 with nothing touched.
- The row stubs bmad-agent-po/SKILL.md in the profile's skill tree (the
resolve skill probe). Negative leg (marker set): resolve exits 1, the run
stays paused at A's epic-boundary, `epic-close-unverified` is journaled and
no B run exists. Positive leg: resolve exits 0, the recorded argv is the
profile binary plus one prompt naming A's epic file absolutely with the
parent clause, cwd is the project, A's journal carries two
session-start/end pairs (rc 0), `epic-close-verified` (done) and
`initiative-chain-next` A -> B, B pauses at its own boundary, and the
checkout is clean.
- The marker sits in the ignored run dir, not the checkout: an untracked
marker in the project made the resume refuse on a dirty worktree, so the
negative leg's exit 1 held even with the verify ablated.
- test_conftest's tmux-gated inventory for the module goes 16 -> 17.
Ablation (performed): `_epic_close_check` returning no missing lines makes the
`.no-close` resolve verify, resume and drain A (exit 0), and the row FAILS on
the negative leg's exit-code assertion.
…ary pauses
Lead the tickets epic-boundary remedy with `bmad-loop resolve` across the
escalations guide (pause row, a short close flow with flags, refusals and
journal kinds), the tickets guide (pause row, chain paragraph, closure
section), the resolve CLI reference, the TUI guide (R and the epic-closure
viewer's Close with bmad-agent-po) and the FEATURES resolve and retrospective
entries. Closing by hand, then resume, stays the alternative. Add the
CHANGELOG entry under Unreleased/Added.

Load epic-close configuration explicitly in tickets mode
On a supported mixed install containing the v7 marker and leftover v6 configuration keys, this call can resolve the configuration as v6 rather than v7. Partial v6 keys cause load_paths to raise, while complete v6 keys cause paths_for_state to reject a chained run because the resulting paths have no active initiative. Consequently, epic-close resolve refuses runs that ordinary resume supports: _prepare_resume_locked already passes want_tickets=runs.resolves_as_tickets(state). Apply the same hint to both configuration reads in this branch, including the post-session reload.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in b85c687: both config reads in the epic-close branch (pre-session and the post-session reload) now pass want_tickets=runs.resolves_as_tickets(state), as _prepare_resume_locked does. Regression test: test_resolve_epic_close_reads_a_mixed_install_as_tickets (a v7 install with a leftover v6 key). Removing the hint makes the test fail with the partial-v6 config error.
Bot round 1 on #1014:
- Read the BMAD config with want_tickets, before and after the session, as
the resume does: a mixed install's leftover v6 keys no longer resolve the
run as v6 (Codex P2).
- Refuse a code root changed during the epic-close session: the epic folder
was located in the old tree (CodeRabbit; the escalation arm's refusal).
- Guard both post-session journal writes with runs.is_run, so a run removed
by delete --force is reported, not recreated (CodeRabbit).
