feat: preview vertex pages with local headless Chrome - #15
A localhost sidecar runs one muted headless Chrome and keeps up to 100 page targets, with a still for each vertex and a single live screencast for the focused vertex.
The browser viewer paints that capture on a camera-facing quad. Frames use a latest-only mailbox and do not enter the 64-command queue.
This is a local proof of concept. It does not change the published npm or Python packages, and setPageFrame is not part of the public TypeScript API.
Test plan
node --test poc/hypergraph-browser/session.test.mjs poc/hypergraph-browser/server.test.mjs poc/hypergraph-browser/chrome.test.mjs (no Chrome)
Manual, with local Chrome: npm run build --prefix web, then node poc/hypergraph-browser/server.mjs and npm run serve --prefix web. Open http://127.0.0.1:8080/demo/browser.html. All five vertices become stills. Focusing one animates only that quad. Focusing another freezes the first on its last frame. Stopping the sidecar leaves no Chrome process.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a browser demo that displays page previews and live frames for pages in a graph. Selecting a page brings it into focus; changing or clearing the selection updates live capture.
Added viewer support for receiving page images up to 640 pixels per side; larger frames are ignored. The demo displays connection status and errors, and keeps audio muted.
Included a sample graph to explore the demo.
Added a browser service that opens pages from the graph, provides preview images, and streams live frames for the focused page.

Walkthrough
This change adds a Chrome-backed page capture sidecar and browser demo. It also adds page-frame submission through the web SDK and runtime into Bevy textured quads. The sidecar sends initial JPEG stills and focused live frames for fixture vertices.
Adds Chrome target creation, JPEG screenshots, throttled screencasting, and page-session focus management. Tests cover executable paths, page opening, focus switching, and the target limit.
Sidecar server and message flow poc/hypergraph-browser/fixture.json, poc/hypergraph-browser/server.mjs, poc/hypergraph-browser/server.test.mjs
Adds a fixture-backed HTTP and WebSocket server. It sends stored stills to clients, routes focus messages to the page session, and broadcasts live frames.

Adds frame validation and mailbox handling, then applies frames to matching scene nodes as camera-facing textured quads. The SDK exposes setPageFrame; tests cover submission, size rejection, and disposal.
Adds the browser demo page and client. The client loads the fixture, displays sidecar stills and frames, and sends focus updates for a single selected vertex.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to c1ec7
The demo can leave a stale quad showing an earlier page image, can keep more than one page animating after quick focus changes, and may render page quads facing away from the camera. Chrome can also be left running if the sidecar is interrupted during startup. These are local proof-of-concept issues, but they should be resolved or accepted before merge.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to c1ec7
The localhost-only default limits exposure, but connecting clients receive captured pages and control a shared browser session without authentication. Overlapping focus requests can also leave multiple pages streaming after focus is cleared. These are meaningful isolation and capture-lifecycle risks, even for a local proof of concept.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The new WebSocket service authenticates neither clients nor browser origins. Every accepted connection immediately receives all configured-page stills and subsequently receives live frames, while also gaining global focus control. An unauthorized loopback client, including an untrusted web origin where browser policy permits the connection, can therefore read captured content and interfere with capture selection. The default public fixture limits immediate confidentiality impact, but custom configured pages can contain private content. Loopback binding restricts network reachability; it does not establish viewer identity.
Medium · security · inferred: All clients share one session, but focus requests execute without serialization. Two requests can both observe no live target, pass the asynchronous foregrounding step, and start different screencasts before either commits the live identity. Only the last identity remains tracked, so clearing focus can leave another stream active and still broadcast. A connecting client can exploit this interleaving to defeat the intended single-stream resource and capture-lifecycle boundary across configured targets. Serial stop-before-start and per-target idempotency do not prevent the cross-target race.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The independently reachable scope is one running sidecar's configured pages, captured pixels, and global focus state, with a default ceiling of 100 targets. A socket client learns existing vertex IDs from still messages but cannot introduce navigation URLs. Private-resource exposure depends on configured URLs and Chrome's network reach; the bundled fixture uses public resources. No cloud, persistent-store, or cross-tenant authority expansion was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An unauthorized client that can reach the loopback socket can receive all stored stills without issuing a command, select known targets, and receive subsequent frames. Overlapping focus commands can additionally create untracked active streams that survive a later clear-focus request. Cross-origin web access is conditional on browser policy, not demonstrated by a live-browser test.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Controls restrict socket input to focus operations and default exposure to loopback. Navigation URLs originate in a startup fixture, not socket messages. Chrome launch options do not explicitly disable sandboxing, reuse a user-data directory, or publish a remote debugging endpoint. Those controls limit authority but do not authenticate viewers or isolate clients sharing the session.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The single-stream guarantee currently depends on caller serialization rather than an enforced transition boundary. Divergent session and driver flags complicate recovery, while frame broadcasting checks target membership rather than current capture ownership. Consequently, the target-count limit and per-target throttle do not establish a one-stream aggregate capture bound.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Require a per-launch viewer capability before disclosing captures or accepting focus commands, validate expected browser origins, and retain loopback binding. Define whether multiple clients intentionally share capture authority.
proposed — Give one owner responsibility for serialized focus transitions, capture-state recovery, and frame-forwarding eligibility. Make failed starts restore recoverable state, define disconnect behavior, and pair browser acquisition with explicit startup rollback.

Headless Chrome often paints a static page once. Skipping every third frame dropped that paint, so focus produced no live image. Forward every paint and keep the listener near 5 Hz, and let the sidecar own process signals so its close is the one that stops Chrome.

Transform::looking_at points local -Z toward camera_position, while the Bevy 0.18.1 Rectangle front face points along +Z. The quad therefore faces away from the camera and can be removed by the default back-face culling.

Isolate per-vertex failures during startup.
session.open rejects if page.goto fails with a non-timeout error. Examples are net::ERR_ABORTED for a download-type URL, DNS failure, or no network. The await in this loop then rejects startPageServer. One bad external URL stops the whole sidecar. The fixture includes .mp4 and .pdf URLs and URLs on three external hosts, so this is a realistic trigger.
Catch the error per vertex, log it, and continue. The remaining vertices still get stills.

Serialize focus calls. Concurrent calls can leave more than one page screencasting.
focus reads live before its await calls and writes live only after startScreencast resolves. Two focus messages in flight therefore see stale state.
Example trigger: the demo sends focus('a') and then focus('b') on two quick selection changes.
focus('a') is still awaiting bringToFront or startScreencast, so live is null.
focus('b') sees live === null and skips the stop step. It starts b.
live ends as b, and nothing ever stops a.
a keeps broadcasting frames. This breaks the PR invariant that only the focused vertex animates.
The same race applies to focus(null) while a start is in flight. The stream starts after the user cleared focus.
A promise chain fixes this. It also covers several WebSocket clients that call focus at the same time.
🔒️ Proposed fix: run focus operations one at a time
export function createPageSession({maxTargets = MAX_PAGE_TARGETS} = {}) {
const targets = new Map();

}
Add a test that starts focus('a') and focus('b') without awaiting the first. It should assert that only b is screencasting.

Cover signals for the full browser lifetime.
server.mjs installs SIGINT and SIGTERM handlers only after all targets are opened, and it never installs a SIGHUP handler. A signal during startup, or SIGHUP after startup, can terminate Node without closing the detached Chrome process. Register cleanup before launch and handle SIGHUP too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Deliver the latest throttled screencast frame.
Within 200 ms of the last forwarded frame, the throttle at chrome.mjs:74 returns without keeping the new frame. If Chrome sends a burst of paints and then the page stops painting, the final paint is discarded. The quad can then keep an earlier frame. Store the newest suppressed frame and emit it when the interval expires. This keeps the rate at or below 5 Hz and still sends the first paint immediately.

Review comment at @poc/hypergraph-browser/chrome.mjs at line 86:
Update the `Page.screencastFrame` handler to retain the newest frame suppressed
by the 200 ms throttle and emit it when the interval expires, while sending the
first frame immediately and maintaining the 5 Hz limit. When screencasting
stops, clear the pending timer and frame so no stale frame is emitted.
