Fixes #9133

Description

Problem and cause

Importing monai invokes load_submodules, which eagerly imports nvimgcodec_pydicom_plugin. The plugin loads nvidia.nvimgcodec at module import time, causing warnings about missing optional nvTIFF and nvJPEG2000 libraries even when users are not reading DICOM data.

Solution

Exclude nvimgcodec_pydicom_plugin from eager submodule loading in monai/__init__.py. This avoids importing the plugin during MONAI initialization while preserving access to the reader when explicitly needed.

An alternative would be to move the plugin's own imports into a method so they occur only when the reader is used. I'm open to switching to that approach if the maintainers prefer it.

Reproduction environment

Python 3.12, WSL2, CPU PyTorch, and nvidia-nvimgcodec-cu13 installed without the nvTIFF and nvJPEG2000 wheels.

Testing

  • python -m pytest tests/data/test_init_reader.py -q — passed (5 passed, 3 skipped, 7 subtests passed).
  • python -m pytest tests/transforms/test_load_image.py -q — passed (2 passed, 46 skipped).
  • ./runtests.sh --ruff — passed.

The regression test is skipped when nvidia.nvimgcodec is unavailable. The integration and quick-test suites listed in the template have not been run.

Types of changes

  • Non-breaking change.
  • Breaking change.
  • New tests added to cover the changes.
  • Integration tests passed locally by running ./runtests.sh -f -u --net --coverage.
  • Quick tests passed locally by running ./runtests.sh --quick --unittests --disttests.
  • In-line docstrings updated.
  • Documentation updated and make html tested in docs/.

📝 Walkthrough

MONAI’s submodule loader excludes modules whose names end in nvimgcodec_pydicom_plugin. A subprocess test checks that MONAI imports successfully without loading nvidia.nvimgcodec. The test skips when that package or module is unavailable.

Importing MONAI defers nvImageCodec loading, while explicitly constructing the accelerated reader retains access to the plugin. No concrete merge-blocking risk is evident.

78-81: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Check stderr for import-time diagnostics.

capture_output=True collects stderr, but the test uses it only as a failure message. An import can emit nvTIFF or nvJPEG2000 warnings, exit successfully, and still print False. The test then passes. Assert that stderr is empty.

Suggested fix
        self.assertEqual(result.returncode, 0, result.stderr)
        self.assertEqual(result.stdout.strip(), "False")
+ self.assertEqual(result.stderr, "")

I replaced optional_import("nvidia.nvimgcodec") with PathFinder.find_spec() to check whether the package is available without importing it.

The previous check could trigger the native-library warnings we are trying to prevent. It could also skip the test if importing the package failed because of a native-library issue, potentially hiding the problem. The updated check only inspects package availability, and the subprocess test verifies that importing MONAI does not load nvidia.nvimgcodec.

I also added an assertion that stderr is empty to ensure the subprocess produces no warnings or error output.

Hi @vikasreddy11 I'm not sure adding the exclusion in the module loading actually does anything for the problem, I still see the output being printed when LoadImage is instantiated. I think it's reasonable to only see the output when trying to read Dicom files for the first time, so moving calls to register_as_decoder_plugin to be lazy may be the way to do that if it works.

For example:

$ PYTHONPATH=. python -c 'from monai.transforms import LoadImage; LoadImage()'
nvImageCodec is not available; skipping pydicom decoder plugin registration.
NvImgCodecPydicomReader: nvImageCodec decoder plugin did not register successfully. Falling back to default pydicom decoders.

Also, the warning about skipping registration here should be debug instead of warning to make everything quieter.
