Summary

GitHub's new ubuntu-24.04 runner image (20261018.339.1) runs kernel 7.0.0-1017-azure, and mongo:9.0.2 refuses to start on it: "MongoDB cannot start: Linux kernel versions 6.19 and newer has a known incompatibility with this version of MongoDB" (SERVER-121912). A Frontend E2E job of #414 landed on that image and failed before any test (job), and the share of such runners grows as GitHub rolls the image out.

Changes

mongo goes from 9.0.2 to 9.0.4 in both compose services and in the deployment docs. 9.0.4 carries SERVER-131779: its check refuses only 6.19.0 through 7.0.13, and on Ubuntu 7.0 kernels it reads the upstream version from /proc/version_signature (startup_check_rseq.cpp).

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring (no functional changes)
  • CI/CD or tooling changes

Test Plan

  • Backend unit tests pass (cd backend && uv run pytest tests/unit)
  • Frontend unit tests pass (cd frontend && npm run test)
  • Backend E2E tests pass (docker compose exec -T backend sh -c 'uv sync --group test --no-dev --frozen --no-install-project --no-build && pytest tests/e2e')
  • Frontend E2E tests pass (cd frontend && npm run test:e2e)
  • API spec and client regenerated if routes or schemas changed (./deploy.sh openapi, then ./deploy.sh types), never edited by hand
  • Manual testing performed

Validation: this PR's E2E jobs start 9.0.4. Whether the new image's kernel is built on upstream 7.0.14 or later is untested until a job lands on it. Production runs a 5.15 kernel, so the check doesn't apply there.

Checklist

  • My code follows the project's style guidelines
  • I have run pre-commit run --all-files and all checks pass
  • I have added tests that prove my fix/feature works
  • I have updated documentation if needed
  • My changes don't introduce new warnings

Summary by cubic

Bumps mongo from 9.0.2 to 9.0.4 in both compose services and the deployment docs. 9.0.2 refuses to start on Ubuntu 7.0 kernels, which GitHub's new ubuntu-24.04 runner image runs, so Frontend E2E jobs failed before any test. 9.0.4 carries SERVER-131779, which only blocks kernels 6.19.0 through 7.0.13 and reads the upstream version from /proc/version_signature on Ubuntu.

Written for commit 5710573. Summary will update on new commits.
