Summary of changes

Changes introduced in this pull request:

  • When the daemon imports a snapshot from a URL (--auto-download-snapshot or --import-snapshot <url>), it fetches <snapshot-url>.metadata.json and reads the Snapshot.Extended key that contains the receipts_events and tipset_lookup enriched snapshots
  • Remove the backfill from external-rpc-checks

Closes #6802

Change checklist

  • I have performed a self-review of my own code,
  • I have made corresponding changes to the documentation. All new code adheres to the team's documentation standards,
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works (if possible),
  • I have made sure the CHANGELOG is up-to-date. All user-facing changes should be reflected in this document.

Outside contributions

  • This pull request is based on an issue that a maintainer has accepted (see Before Opening a Pull Request).
  • I have read and agree to the CONTRIBUTING document.
  • I have read and agree to the AI Policy document. I understand that failure to comply with the guidelines will lead to rejection of the pull request.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • URL-based snapshot imports now also import receipts, events, and tipset lookup data when advertised in snapshot metadata.
    • Extended snapshot files are checked for valid filenames and matching checksums before import. Tipset lookup data is imported only when its entries meet snapshot checkpoint requirements.
    • Missing metadata or failures fetching or importing extended snapshots do not prevent the base snapshot from being imported.

Walkthrough

URL-based snapshot imports now check adjacent metadata for extended snapshot files. When metadata advertises files, the importer downloads and verifies them, then imports receipts/events and tipset-lookup data. The external RPC check script no longer runs index backfill.

Changes

Extended Snapshot Import

Layer / File(s) Summary
Metadata discovery and file validation
src/daemon/db_util.rs
Metadata structures describe optional extended files. Retrieval handles missing metadata, and downloads validate filenames and SHA-256 checksums. Tests cover metadata parsing.
Extended data import
src/daemon/db_util.rs
The importer writes receipts/events CAR blocks to the blockstore. It validates tipset-lookup entries before writing mappings. The coordinator processes each advertised snapshot independently and logs import failures.
Snapshot integration and supporting updates
src/daemon/mod.rs, scripts/tests/external-rpc-checks/init.sh, CHANGELOG.md
The daemon invokes the importer for URL-based snapshots. The external RPC check script removes index backfill, and the changelog describes the extended-snapshot imports.

Extended snapshot imports can silently omit data, exhaust daemon memory on a large sidecar, or persist invalid block and lookup entries. RPC checks can also start without the historical data their former backfill prepared. These risks should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merging.

Explanation

Issue [#6802] requires Forest archive enrichment with receipts, events, and an epoch-to-tipset mapping. This PR imports externally generated extended snapshots from URL metadata and removes the test backfill. It does not generate or backfill enriched archive data. The tipset lookup validation checks checkpoint epochs and the snapshot head, but it does not establish that entries are strictly finalized. The added tests cover metadata parsing only, not extended snapshot download or import behavior.

Resolution

Implement and test the archive generation or backfill required by [#6802]. Include post-FVM receipts and events and a strictly finalized epoch-to-tipset mapping. If this PR intentionally remains import-only, do not close [#6802] and track the importer under a separate issue.

the sidecar data; require successful sidecar imports or retain the former index
backfill fallback before proceeding to the RPC checks.

Review comments at @src/daemon/db_util.rs:
- Line 409: Update the SHA-256 calculation in the download verification flow to
read the temporary file in bounded chunks and incrementally hash them, instead
of loading it all with tokio::fs::read; preserve the existing digest encoding
and verification behavior.
- Line 374: Update the metadata URL construction so `.metadata.json` is appended
to the parsed snapshot URL’s path, preserving any query parameters unchanged.
Replace the full-URL string formatting in the `metadata_url` assignment with
path-aware URL manipulation.
- Around line 426-427: In the CAR import loop, validate each `CarBlock` before
calling `db.put_keyed`, so blocks whose data does not match their CID are
rejected rather than stored. Use `CarBlock::validate` and propagate its
validation error.
- Around line 451-453: Before the hamt.for_each_cacheless write loop, validate
each checkpoint key against tipsets on the imported head’s ancestry, not only by
checking that its epoch is at or below head.epoch(); reject keys that resolve to
a different snapshot or fork, following the database-backed validation used for
manual sidecar imports.
