Version: N/A (no firmware change)

What does this implement/fix?

Brings main into beta so it has the Auto Assign change from the default branch: issues and PRs go to the AUTO_ASSIGNEE organization variable (currently WestwardWinds) via the shared ApolloAutomation/Workflows workflow, on pull_request_target.

Conflicts resolved:

  • autoassign.yml: takes main's version
  • ci.yml (where it conflicted): main's thin caller of the shared esphome-ci.yml@main, without the label-check job, because this branch already runs Label Check from its own label-check.yml

Also carries main's other non-firmware commits (CI consolidation, dependabot config, datasheets, PR template) that this branch was missing. No ESPHome YAML changes.

Types of changes

  • Bugfix (fixed change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (thanks!)
  • Breaking change (repair/feature that breaks existing functionality)
  • Dependency Update - Does not publish
  • Other - Does not publish
  • Website of github readme file update - Does not publish
  • Github workflows - Does not publish

Checklist / Checklijst:

  • The code change has been tested and works locally
  • The code change has not yet been tested

If user-visible functionality or configuration variables are added/modified:

  • Added/updated documentation for the web page

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Dependency update checks now run monthly rather than daily.
    • Issue and pull request assignment, along with firmware validation in standard and weekly workflows, now use shared automation. Assignment is determined by the repository’s configured organization setting.
    • The weekly workflow now uses read-only access to repository contents.

chore(ci): bump actions/checkout from 6.0.3 to 7.0.0 in the github-actions group
Replaces inline version-pinned actions with thin callers of
ApolloAutomation/Workflows reusable workflows referenced @main. Leaf
repo now contains zero dependabot-bumpable refs; action version pins
are centralized in the Workflows repo. Dependabot schedule relaxed to
monthly as a safety net.

Consolidate workflows into shared ApolloAutomation/Workflows reusable workflows
Drop the hard-coded assignee and call the shared Workflows autoassign
workflow, which now falls back to the AUTO_ASSIGNEE organization
variable. Run on pull_request_target so assignment also works on
fork-submitted PRs; the workflow never checks out PR code.

Walkthrough

Dependabot’s GitHub Actions update schedule changes from daily to monthly. The auto-assignment workflow calls a reusable workflow. The CI and weekly workflows delegate ESPHome builds to a reusable workflow and pass configuration file paths.

Changes

Dependabot Schedule

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update Dependabot schedule
.github/dependabot.yml
The GitHub Actions update interval changes from daily to monthly. The directory, commit-message prefix, and grouping remain configured.

Issue Assignment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Delegate issue assignment
.github/workflows/autoassign.yml
The workflow calls a reusable auto-assignment workflow. It no longer sets the assignee or assignee count locally, and it identifies AUTO_ASSIGNEE as the assignee source.

ESPHome Build Workflows

Layer / File(s) Summary
Delegate ESPHome builds
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/weekly.yml
Both workflows replace local build matrices with reusable workflow calls that receive the ESPHome YAML file paths. The CI workflow removes id-token: write; the weekly workflow sets read-only contents permission.

Automatic assignment of new issues and pull requests may stop working because the shared workflow call does not pass the assignee. Fix this before merging. Pinning the shared workflows to a commit is also recommended.

A rabbit checks the monthly date,
Then hops where build workflows await.
Two YAML paths go on their way,
While AUTO_ASSIGNEE picks the day.
The rabbit thumps, the checks begin,

Pin both callers to one reviewed workflow commit. Both callers use @main, so a change in ApolloAutomation/Workflows can change their build steps without review in this repository. A full commit SHA fixes the workflow version each caller runs. (docs.github.com)

  • .github/workflows/ci.yml#L12-L12: replace @main with the reviewed full commit SHA.
  • .github/workflows/weekly.yml#L13-L13: use the same reviewed full commit SHA.

Based on learnings: mutable reusable-workflow refs can be retargeted, so pin them to a full immutable commit SHA.

Pass the required assignee input.

The called workflow requires assignees, but this job passes no inputs. GitHub cannot run the delegated assignment as configured. Pass the organization variable through with so opened issues and pull requests receive the intended assignee. (github.com)

Pin the reusable workflow to an immutable commit.

@main can change the called workflow without a change to this caller. The called workflow receives issue and pull-request write permissions. Pin a reviewed commit SHA so changes to the shared workflow require an explicit update here. (github.com) Based on learnings, mutable CI workflow references should use full commit SHAs.
