Very good idea! Both KDE and XFCE knows session restore, no idea why Cinnamon lacks these basic features! I approve this idea! |

Not a perfect solution, but you can try it. Open dconf-editor (install it if it is not) and set to true the key Or use the command: Save your current work then log-out/log-in. |

I tried EndavourOS for a while and I prefer my good old reliable battle tested Mint. But not having session restore is a major letdown. We gotta bring it back to life! |

Since Cinnamon is a fork of Gnome, could try porting/rebasing the necessary parts from Gnome, although I imagine it would be quite complicated and require many changes in multiple components for things like this. |

I used session restore on Mac, but didn't use it very much. Often a blank desktop is much better, this is my experience. Since MS changed their license for win11, we got a influx of picky and desperate users who are angry with the features on Linux, because a lot doesn't work like windows. Linux isn't the cause of MS license changes, so who should be angry with whom? Instead to ask for features, I'd look into alternatives, like cinnamon spices: Here another great applet of claudiux: |

One way this could be implemented is to have an internal history of all the opened windows and the other parameters about them, such as the commands used to open them, their size, position and which monitor they're on. This would be updated as the window manager does stuff (resize windows, minimize, maximize and so on). Once the user closes the window, it would be removed from the history. Then, if the feature is enabled, whenever the system restarts it would just replay the history of changes in the previous session. |

I have Cinnamon as desktop environment on all my non-server Linux machines and I would also love to have this feature. I experienced it for the first time on my Chromebook (where it's a default feature) and I fell in love with it. When possible, I use hibernation, but in some cases - e.g. Surface laptops/tablets - hibernation is not supported by Linux, therefore the user needs to shutdown and restart the machine everytime. |
Uh oh!

Dear Linux Mint Community,
I would like to kindly request the implementation of a session restoration feature in the Cinnamon desktop environment. This feature would allow users to save their current session, including all open applications and windows, and restore it automatically after restarting the system. Such functionality is incredibly useful for enhancing productivity and maintaining workflows, especially for users who rely on multiple applications during their daily tasks.
Currently, this feature is not natively available in Cinnamon. While there are workarounds like configuring startup applications or using third-party tools, these solutions do not fully replicate the seamless session restoration experience provided in other desktop environments like GNOME and KDE Plasma.
I understand that in the past, tools such as the "Icing Window Saver" applet were available to address similar needs. However, this applet was removed from the Cinnamon Spices due to inactivity and lack of maintenance, as discussed in the archived repository (Icing Window Saver GitHub Archive) and this issue thread (Cinnamon-Spices-Applets Issue #2352). While I recognize the importance of maintaining high standards and security for applets, I believe a built-in session-saving feature would be a more robust and long-term solution.
Would it be possible to consider adding this functionality in a future release of Cinnamon? I genuinely believe that this feature would greatly benefit many users and make Cinnamon even more user-friendly. Thank you for considering this request, and I am more than happy to collaborate or provide further feedback to support this effort.
