Very high CPU usage in X while resizing

When I resize the window for a decent sized heat map (e.g. 1000 x 50) it is very slow to render and causes a lot of CPU activity in the X process (hanging the system for a few seconds). It would be great if it could be faster.

Any ideas?

Hmm, presumably most of the time is being spent in Cairo calls, and it's probably resizing every time you drag it just a little further. I don't know how to make the resize operation any less expensive at least without a fundamental rearchitecture to use a much lower-level graphics library, but I might be able to do something like redraw at most once a second or redraw only after you release the resize drag. I've been meaning to look into this as it occurs on scatter plots too.
