Nothing in the prompt marks them as data, so an instruction planted in a header competes with the system instruction on equal terms. Wrap the payload in markers carrying a random per-request nonce and state in the system prompt that the marked block is data. A fixed marker was rejected: JSON.stringify leaves < and > alone, so a known marker can be closed early from inside a header. An answer reproducing the nonce is replaced with a fallback message. --- package.json | 2 +- src/integrations/vercel-ai/index.ts | 4 +- src/services/askAi/inputs/eventSolving.ts | 11 ++ src/services/askAi/security/nonceEcho.ts | 27 +++++ src/services/askAi/security/spotlighting.ts | 82 +++++++++++++++ src/services/askAi/service.ts | 47 +++++++-- test/services/askAi-nonce-echo.test.ts | 36 +++++++ test/services/askAi-spotlighting.test.ts | 108 ++++++++++++++++++++ test/services/askAi.test.ts | 84 +++++++++++++-- 9 files changed, 384 insertions(+), 17 deletions(-) create mode 100644 src/services/askAi/security/nonceEcho.ts create mode 100644 src/services/askAi/security/spotlighting.ts create mode 100644 test/services/askAi-nonce-echo.test.ts create mode 100644 test/services/askAi-spotlighting.test.ts diff --git a/package.json b/package.json index 638a7e30..db9cff2d 100644 --- a/package.json +++ b/package.json @@ -1,6 +1,6 @@ { "name": "hawk.api", - "version": "1.5.12", + "version": "1.5.13", "main": "index.ts", "license": "BUSL-1.1", "scripts": { diff --git a/src/integrations/vercel-ai/index.ts b/src/integrations/vercel-ai/index.ts index 3d22bdf4..6dfe0e83 100644 --- a/src/integrations/vercel-ai/index.ts +++ b/src/integrations/vercel-ai/index.ts @@ -17,6 +17,9 @@ export interface CompletionParams { /** * Interface for interacting with Vercel AI Gateway + * + * No tools are passed to the model, so a hijacked prompt can only produce text. + * Adding them requires reworking the security layer first. */ class VercelAIApi { /** @@ -36,7 +39,6 @@ class VercelAIApi { * * @param {CompletionParams} params - system instruction and prompt to complete * @returns {Promise} text generated by the model - * @todo add defence against invalid prompt injection */ public async complete({ system, prompt }: CompletionParams): Promise { const { text } = await generateText({ diff --git a/src/services/askAi/inputs/eventSolving.ts b/src/services/askAi/inputs/eventSolving.ts index 0969b048..5068d62d 100644 --- a/src/services/askAi/inputs/eventSolving.ts +++ b/src/services/askAi/inputs/eventSolving.ts @@ -1,5 +1,16 @@ import { EventData, EventAddons } from '@hawk.so/types'; +/** + * Serialize event data for the model prompt. + * + * @warning returns unwrapped attacker-controlled data (headers, user-agent, + * query params, stack trace). This route calls Ask AI service about specified event and responds text/event-stream. Reponse carrying AiStream which represent AiStreamPart sequence: either text-delta (text-increments generated by AI assistant) or error (failure description during response generation). NOTE: Response doesn't carry reasoning, tooling and start/end parts since they're not required yet. Route checks workspace membership before calling Ask AI. For this purpose function checkUserInWorkspaceByProjectId became exported. Failed membership check leads to response with 403. Also route checks if specified event exists. Failed check leads to response with 404. Aborting request cancel Ask AI suggestion generation. For this purpose AbortController is declared as an eslint global: it is on globalThis since Node 15, but eslint's node env predates it. --- .eslintrc.js | 6 + package.json | 6 +- src/directives/requireUserInWorkspace.ts | 2 +- src/index.ts | 6 + src/integrations/vercel-ai/index.ts | 81 ++++- src/services/askAi/index.ts | 1 + src/services/askAi/routes.ts | 165 ++++++++++ src/services/askAi/security/nonceEcho.ts | 5 - src/services/askAi/service.ts | 77 ++++- src/services/types.ts | 4 +- test/helpers/expressRequest.ts | 173 +++++++++++ test/integrations/github-routes.test.ts | 124 ++------ test/integrations/vercel-ai.test.ts | 77 ++++- test/services/askAi/routes.test.ts | 288 ++++++++++++++++++ .../security/nonceEcho.test.ts} | 3 +- .../security/spotlighting.test.ts} | 2 +- .../{askAi.test.ts => askAi/service.test.ts} | 58 +++- yarn.lock | 57 ++-- 18 files changed, 979 insertions(+), 156 deletions(-) create mode 100644 src/services/askAi/routes.ts create mode 100644 test/helpers/expressRequest.ts create mode 100644 test/services/askAi/routes.test.ts rename test/services/{askAi-nonce-echo.test.ts => askAi/security/nonceEcho.test.ts} (86%) rename test/services/{askAi-spotlighting.test.ts => askAi/security/spotlighting.test.ts} (98%) rename test/services/{askAi.test.ts => askAi/service.test.ts} (65%) diff --git a/.eslintrc.js b/.eslintrc.js index 12245e12..50b00a21 100644 --- a/.eslintrc.js +++ b/.eslintrc.js @@ -4,6 +4,12 @@ module.exports = { 'node': true, 'jest': true }, + globals: { + /** + * TODO: bump ESLint because its current Node environment is missing required globals + */ + 'AbortController': 'readonly' + }, rules: { '@typescript-eslint/camelcase': 'warn', '@typescript-eslint/no-unused-vars': 'warn', diff --git a/package.json b/package.json index db9cff2d..25b4791b 100644 --- a/package.json +++ b/package.json @@ -1,6 +1,6 @@ { "name": "hawk.api", - "version": "1.5.13", + "version": "1.5.14", "main": "index.ts", "license": "BUSL-1.1", "scripts": { @@ -37,12 +37,12 @@ "xml2js": "^0.6.2" }, "dependencies": { - "@ai-sdk/openai": "^2.0.64", + "@ai-sdk/provider-utils": "^3.0.36", "@graphql-tools/merge": "^8.3.1", "@graphql-tools/schema": "^8.5.1", "@graphql-tools/utils": "^8.9.0", "@hawk.so/nodejs": "^3.3.2", - "@hawk.so/types": "^0.5.9", + "@hawk.so/types": "^0.7.0", "@n1ru4l/json-patch-plus": "^0.2.0", "@node-saml/node-saml": "^5.0.1", "@octokit/oauth-methods": "^4.0.0", diff --git a/src/directives/requireUserInWorkspace.ts b/src/directives/requireUserInWorkspace.ts index 092b651b..1626cccd 100644 --- a/src/directives/requireUserInWorkspace.ts +++ b/src/directives/requireUserInWorkspace.ts @@ -37,7 +37,7 @@ async function checkUserInWorkspaceByWorkspaceId(context: ResolverContextBase, w * @param context - request context * @param projectId - project id */ -async function checkUserInWorkspaceByProjectId(context: ResolverContextBase, projectId: string): Promise { +export async function checkUserInWorkspaceByProjectId(context: ResolverContextBase, projectId: string): Promise { const userId = context.user.id;
