This document describes how to run Checkstyle using the command line tool. The latest version of Checkstyle can be downloaded as described at Download section. This command line tool is included in the Checkstyle distribution.

The exit code of the command is the number of errors found during the audit, but it is limited to 255 at most, as operating systems truncate exit codes to 8 bits and an error count that is a multiple of 256 would otherwise be reported as 0, which looks like a successful run. The closing message, for example "Checkstyle ends with 300 errors.", always shows the real number of errors.
