Issue description

Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding PnP Search v4.11.0 and its dependency on Microsoft Graph Toolkit (MGT).

Since Microsoft has announced the retirement of MGT effective August 28, 2026, I wanted to understand whether this retirement will have any impact on applications using PnP Search v4.11.0.

Does PnP Search v4.11.0 have any dependency on MGT that would require customers to migrate or update their solutions? Or is it unaffected by the MGT retirement?

I'm looking for clarification on this so we can plan our migration strategy appropriately.

PnP Modern Search v4.11.0 does have a direct dependency on Microsoft Graph Toolkit 4.1.0. However, MGT is loaded conditionally and is primarily used by features such as <mgt-*> custom templates and the MGT persona hover card in the People layout. Core search functionality is not generally dependent on MGT.

MGT retirement on August 28, 2026 is not documented as a shutdown of the underlying Microsoft Graph APIs. PnP maintainers have stated that the bundled components should continue running while those APIs remain compatible, but Microsoft will no longer provide maintenance, compatibility, or security fixes.

Customers should therefore inventory any MGT-enabled templates or People hover-card configuration, upgrade from v4.11.0, and consider the native Microsoft 365 Live Persona Card or other non-MGT alternatives. Disabling MGT immediately on the retirement date is not required, but continued long-term use carries support and compatibility risk.
